AFL Player #19: Nick Hind

Where does my boy play today?
With all the changes (including the late Setters out) I’m not sure how the role shuffle plays out for Hind.
Back - could be but suspect not
Forward - love to him laser focused on Essendon Edge tackling at pace (maybe holding the elbow a smidge tighter to the body)
Bench - feel he might be starting here with no other obvious candidates (with Tsatas, ADJ out). Don’t mind this BTW, extra pace against tired legs is a golden combo.

Hind interview preseason talked up sub as specialist role that coach respects and talks up as a strategic function that is really important to the team. Suspect this is a good fit once (if) we had everyone else to select from.

Looks like a fringe player who's a step slower than he once was trying to go the biff because he's not quite able to make the play anymore.

He just failed at going the biff.

I'd drop him for being dumb.
Replacing him with?

I think he should be a pressure forward.

Just play him as sub. That's it.
While I agree that it’s his best role, and possibly our best option for that role, I can’t see how he will ever be match conditioned for those times he’s called on to play from the first few minutes of a game if a player goes down early.

Every few weeks in the VFL then haha

Who out of the 2’s is coming in for him do you the Archie Robert’s is ready?
Probably not, but if he strings together a few like last weekend he might get a crack. A Davey, Tsatas, Guelfi, and a kid called Shiel will all figure prominently as fringe options in the weeks ahead.

Like him as spark plug sub, can play both ends and a little bit of wing and take advantage of tired legs.

Plus I don’t care that he only plays 20 minutes a week, it’s not hurting the development of a younger player.

That last paragraph is the first time I've heard that. Sounds like a soccer approach but it's true. Values the role for fringe players too. Brad's not dumb.

Seeing a lot of people here saying he should be a permanent sub. This can’t happen because he will lose match conditioning and then god help us if he’s subbed in during the first qtr. I like him being our main sub choice especially if we made finals but he needs to play full games during the season.

I think he is a great option as Sub. Can come on and make an impact.. can play back, forward and possible mid/wing if a runner is needed. A change of pace player and a bit of grunt in him which can be needed off the bench.

There are lots of sports where they can keep match condition only playing part minutes. Not sure if Hind can do that but otherwise perhaps you rotate him through the Sub role.. and VFL. Perhaps based on match up or travel or whatever. Davey did a few nice things off the bench last week.. so perhaps you rotate Hind with a few young guys as the sub.

I thought he was really important yesterday against Saints and if you get a chance to use sub as tactical (I know Duz went off but it was about that time) then you need to have a weapon.

I think this is right. Agree we don’t a permanent sub, but Hind seems ideally suited to rotate through with these guys.

plus he goes like a crazy energizer bunny when he comes on as sub :)
The conditioning point above is the major obstacle I think, is it?

I like that he can replace a variety of positions, and like you said he's always full of energy, that can never be questioned.

Lohman has been sub for the AFL team and played VFL on the same weekend, so it's probably possible having a full time auto sub.
