Senior 18. Sam Walsh

He's a modern day Robert Harvey.

He IS. That's a good comparison. A long way to go in order to match Harvey's career achievements, but in terms of style of play, very much so. The whole "vanilla" characterization makes sense: Walsh (nor did Harvey, really) doesn't to do anything particularly extraordinary. Not an amazing kick, not especially big, not explosively fast, not a high-flyer. But just happens to be utterly elite at getting to contest after contest and linking up. Right place, right time, repeatedly, relentlessly.

I just watched a highlights package of Harvey and he was just extraordinary at making his way through traffic, either by shaking off tackles or evading them completely. He's got a pretty stunning set of goals that he kicked over the journey too. Harvey obviously maintained his standards over 20 years and 383 games with 8 x All Australian selections, 2 x Brownlows etc but Walsh has really hit the ground running early in his career. In a successful side with a complementary midfield, you can see him earning more plaudits over the upcoming years.

Walsh is a completely unfair advantage over every other team in the competition. He's like the secret weapon that everyone else wishes they had but can only look on with disbelief as he single-handedly dismantles their ambitions of victory.

Apologies if wrong thread, but on rewatch of the last nights game I cannot understate Walsh’s natural footballing ability. He’s almost robotic in he way he shifts his weight, body, knees around in the contest.

So lucky to have such an elite footballer.
Played in the middle since he started … unlike other “gun” players who’ve played their first seasons floating at Half back
