Montana Ham
DOB:
29-03-2004
Height: 179cm
Club/State: Victoria - Western Jets
Position: Midfield
18-year old Montana Ham is a 180cm athlete who started playing football at just four years old. She has played in four NAB League campaigns and was Best on Ground in Vic Metro's championship this season. She was also judged MVP for the National AFLW Academy side in their game against the U23 All-Stars.

Ham finished second for total disposals at the Under 18 National Championships, boasting the highest contested possession rate (58.6 per cent), and second highest handball-to-kick percentage (also 58.6) of players to register over 50 touches.

Sydney Swans coach Scott Gowans said:
“Mon is a midfielder that can play forward. She is 180cm and loves contested footy, she’s got clean hands and a strong work ethic. We will play Montana in various roles to suit the team needs. Fans can also expect to see her spend some time across the half back line and we are excited to see her in Swans colours.”

The 179-centimetre Ham recently won the Vic Metro MVP and best on ground in the AFLW Academy game. She also played in the under-23 All Stars game earlier this year, where she booted two goals in two minutes and finished with 19 disposals, four clearances and five marks. ‘Equivalent of Patrick Cripps’: The Victorian likely to go No.1 in the AFLW draft

Congratulations to Montana. Hope she enjoys a cracking successful career.

Just out of curiosity I note another draftee has the same first name. Why did parents 18years ago name their daughters after an American State?

"When I was about four, Dad would bring out the plastic sheets and he'd tell me all the positions, what they'd do and how to play them. So at a very young age, footy was drilled into me and was something I gravitated to, and I loved it," Ham said.
"He means everything to me. He's obviously my hero and still is my hero to this day. He taught me everything I know about footy, we would go out to the park and I'd walk around dropping the footy to make sure I was dropping it straight.
"Whenever I'd miss a kick, he'd come over to make sure my technique was in line. He really drilled into me from a young age the basics of footy, and it's something that's stuck with me, those fundamentals.

"To come this far, he's obviously not here with me today, but I know he'll be looking down on me proud. To do it for him – I've actually chosen to wear the number 18 on his back, which is his birthday. So every time I'll step onto the field, it'll be like he's with me."

Is she coming to Sydney to study physiotherapy? Could be a good way for both men's and women's teams to attract young talent by partnering with one of the big unis.

Very happy it's not an ACL but I think she will still miss time.

Re her performance, she showed some glimpses of what she is capable of. She did things faster and more powerfully than the average AFLW player. Once she gets more involved, she is going to destroy the opposition. Looking forward to when (not if) this happens.

That father story breaks my heart. So beautiful, what a shame he isn’t around to see her run out. My son is four and I had him later in life and fear missing a lot of his life as I’m not a healthy person.

Really hope she recovers well from the knee issue and it doesn’t put her at risk of an ACL on return. Feel for the ladies across the comp with the risk of bad injuries very real if the weekends games are something to go by.
