That's a terrible analysis. An AFL list is limited to 40 odd so even if you only draft your list and don't trade, you're going to lose more than 2/3rds of your ~150 selections as "unsuccessful picks". I'm sure North Melbourne have more drafted players on their list. Do those numbers speak for...
It would be a concern given how long we've challenged without a top 10 pick but we have Naicos. It takes rebuilding clubs multiples years at the bottom to hit a superstar jackpot like Naicos. Now it's just about surrounding him with some key talent who don't need to be as high end as him. Our...
Right now our F1st is P10. That plus P34 is pretty close to P9 and P28 for Dangerfield no? (Gore and P50 would cancel out). Schultz should be valued no where near Dangerfield. And sure by the end of the season we could finish with a higher pick. But also there's a clear risk of that being an...
The difference though with Geelong was that they got good value through their trades. They basically traded in Dangerfield and Cameron for not much more than what we paid for Schultz. That's a completely different class of player and I'd happily trade first rounders in that instance whether...
Agree with your strategy in the last paragraph but disagree on Hine. His success rate with the top 20 is on par if not better than other recruiters in terms of hit rate. If one of Allan/Demattia makes it, that continues
Agree with this. But also it's no foregone conclusion that trading in an experienced recruit like Schultz plays 100 games for us. Out of all the ~26 year olds we've traded in recent history, only Howe has given us over 100 games as I recall. None of Varcoe, Greenwood, Luke Ball, Medhurst made...
Exactly this. If we had given up a second rounder for him which is what he's worth then we would have no qualms dropping him if his form isn't up to scratch. Instead the talk of purely pressure and running patterns as his role is what people say about the likes of WHE, Mayne, Varcoe, Blair...
How can you say no draftee can ever be that good at tackling when you literally just listed McCreery as ranking above Schultz and we got him as a pick 44 where he became best 22 in year 1? If we were to trade McCreery, we wouldn't get a first and second round for him even though he's a better...
I don't understand how this draftees can't impact is suddenly the prevailing wisdom, when the biggest factor in our premiership was a 2nd year draftee in Nick Daicos.
Our 2022 prelim run loss by a point was also helped immensely by a 40 goal 2nd year Ginnivan and 2nd year pacy McCreery...
I'm not sure of the standard you classify as good. But of our small forwards in Elliott, Hill, McCreery and Schultz, Schultz would be the first in line for me to be dropped if someone like a Harvey Harrison really cements his spot in the side as another small forward.
How does a 26 year old that's meant to come ready to go get leeway until end of the season to come good whilst a developing young player like Macrae and Reef gets 3 games as sub and then dropped.
If anything Macrae and Reef should be given the block of games to settle in to see if they can...
Can't see FA movement between two big Vic clubs especially one with Blues/Pies rivalry unless you're pea-hearted daisy thomas following your dad across.
The sell to Taylor might be playing at the MCG in front of big Vic crowds. But don't have high hopes of prying a highly rated Vice Captain of...
I'd try shore up our KPD as they're generally easier and cheaper to acquire. Target a Nick Haynes UFA as a 2 year younger stop gap for Howe this year. Target S. Taylor RFA obviously for next year but if unobtainable think Balta could be a good RFA target given Richmond are likely near the bottom...
Didn't Reef have a strong period in the end of last year where he was our best forward and consistently kicking multiple goals? Similar to Macrae, couldn't get a look into the AFL side due to gearing up for finals.
This year, it's been hard for any of them to show consistent VFL form due to...
I don't think there's really a difference between a loose man and an intercept KPD these days with zone defense. Not like Moore dedicates himself to shutting down one KPF opponent. All these guys are expected to pick up a tall in defense but they'll rotate through and zone off when necessary.
Sicily definitely plays as a key defender on key forwards despite his height. Aliir Aliir was good enough at it to be judged best at the position to make All Australian one year, something Weitering has never done. Sam Taylor if anything is another good example of being able to find quality KPD...
I'd actually argue intercepting key defenders are types where late picks have had a higher success rate of unearthing e.g. Harris Andrews, Aliir Aliir, Dylan Grimes, Jeremy McGovern, Sicily, Tom Stewart etc.
All I'm saying is that if I had the #1 pick the last few years, I wouldn't trade it for Weitering. I would for a Naicos, Walsh, Sheezel though. Weitering isn't a rare enough talent nor even the best player in his draft to be truly worthy of the #1 pick with the benefit of hindsight.
Nah Weitering is a good player but not a #1 generational talent. Hasn't even been AA yet. Plenty of players better than him in that draft including Clayton Oliver, Curnow, McKay, Mills etc.
I'm still long term bullish on our list just because we have Naicos. It takes clubs multiple years at the bottom to find a generational talent like him. Look how long it took North to find Sheezel with a top pick and Carlton with Walsh as finally a worthy No. 1 pick.
