Worpel’s TOG I think was also ‘low’ in recent week. Nash was only 74% as well. Feels like trying to use both Nash and worpel in bursts to throw their weight around in the contest.
He’s had two really good bursts of goals up forward (in a quarter or so) then really not much between it. Down back he’s a far more reliable contributor.
We’re trying to maximise where he’ll provide impact which means switching back and forth. Which will obviously be criticised when we lose.
Is hard to see on tv but not convinced on his positioning. Feels like he sets up overly aggressively. When it comes off he looks like a hero but giving up easy ball to opposition.
The defensive stuff has to be non-negotiable. Poppy was the standard - went hard and chased every contest - even...
We’re also playing fairly short up front / ruck. Helps our run but Meek was cooked by end and Chol needed up front. And when game is close having talls who can clunk a few is priceless.
Breust as sub doesn’t help our run either (but helped win the game last week so we tried again).
He’s also setting us up by foot a lot and by eye seems to set us up on attacking chains more than scrim/Sicily do. It’s a trade off that some weeks looks good and others (when defensive side is exposed) looks a poor choice. We’ve also put more ‘defenders’ in backline (which has helped) recently...
Port were always going to come hard in the last quarter. We held up against the saints last week but failed this week (just). We also had an amazing run in the 1st quarter (11-4 free kicks including 3+ shots at goal) and a bit of luck went the other way in end.
We’re playing materially better...
Will any of Sicily, Chol and Lewis be fit? That’s the big swing factor.
Sicily (if fit) straight swap for scrim.
Gunston played well vs dogs but struggled this week - not sure his body can play at intensity every week. Dear might need a break as well. Ramsden an option if Chol/Lewis not...
Still reckon Isaac Cummings from GWS should be on our watch list. Fast, skilled, good size (188cm) and can play hbf and wing at a high level. Has had injury issues this year. A FA so only costs salary.
He seems to be taking the taller opponents when they go up the ground but hands them off as soon as they enter the 50. But also uses his tank to run back and help out so gets a few intercept possession/spoils as 3rd man.
Given we also had frost, scrim and serong as talls we also seem to be...
Breust is a freak / absolute superstar. But doesn’t mean he wasn’t slowing down last year. When you have footy iq off the charts you can still kick goals. His effiency is underrated - only needs a few half chances to score.
Look at Gunston - his body seems cooked but give him the right...
Will we show up with the same intensity? Both the Roos and dogs wins came after big losses where we seemed fired up and cracked in.
The saints good outside users may be an issue on the bigger Tassie ground. We also managed to push extra bodies around the contest vs the dogs to win the ground...
Let’s hope it’s just first year yips.
But was probably expecting he’d be a low possession sharpshooter at afl level. But he’s getting a decent amount of the ball (which is a good thing) but not executing (a composure issue?)
He’s currently doing the work of a role player (eg Morrison) As a top 10 pick you’d hope for more upside/impact. Let’s see how the year pans out but seems a fair bit off getting a decent look as an inside mid.
Nick Holland played 3 games in afl in 2005. He didn’t support buddy/rough at all.
If we traded Lewis and got two top end tall talents is an interesting question of if we could get by in the following 12-24 months.
Ramsden will have another preseason in him, Chol will be 28. Gunston probably...
Let’s see what we put out tomorrow (and if it works) but does feel at times like we may be trying too many things for a relatively young and inexperienced group.
Which at this stage looks like a very good mid with pick 2.
Which then makes the need to trade a F1 for smith less a priority (other than it being well overs) given our kpp issues.
Interesting to see how we manage the combo of chad, Breust, Gunston over rest of year. Arguably playing all 3 isn’t helping our development.
Just no chance chad plays this week - we are conservative in recovery. Will need to get through a full BH game to even be considered.
Anything we get out of from now seems like a bit of a bonus given he’s struggled/underwhelmed to date.
If he has put on size interesting to see how his contested work goes as historically has had a habit of overcommitting to contest and giving away silly frees.
Need to get more out of Ward, McDonald and butler (obv now injured).
Reckon croc should be trialed off hbf (prob at bh first) - he’s just a naturally attacking player with ball in hand. His defensive side is an issue - if Amon can learn then he should be too. But also harder to hide your...
Feels like Ward should be trailed in a high hff role (as would maximise his strengths - run, workrate, clean skills). His stoppage craft doesn’t seem quite there and doesn’t seem quite suited to the wing.
Looks like the afl side will be back to basically full strength in a week or two (ex the season ending injuries).
Will be good to see CJ and DGB back out there soon.
Would be good for Ramsden to get a full game in his preferred spot.
One of weddle or Sicily to go forward. Not sure it’s worth keeping Gunston.
Dunno if we swap Phillips for serong. Massimo might come instead. With west and weightman out outside their 3 talls rest of forward line looks average...
