3 games though? The AFL is clearly sending a message that it rightly won’t be tolerated.

AFL have to be careful now where they draw the line.

Mental health attacks?
Background teasing (ie bush player / poor suburb / Tassie 2 heads / incest banter).

Everyone deserves a fair and safe workplace.

It's a fair question, I'd say one place the AFL could start would be the Protected Categories in the workplace discrimination legislation. Would be interesting though, because things like age-related remarks would be included here.


I guess the best approach is, when in doubt, don't be an arse. Good way to live life.

If the AFL is serious they should put out a notice the next person sanctioned for such an incident will be 10 weeks.

whether you think he deserves 1,2,3 or 15 weeks depends where you sit on the wowser spectrum, some will not care whereas others will think this is the worst thing since someone shot Bambi.

This is on the AFL , and of course Port Adelaide know who their masters are and will cop it because its JF, but if it was Connor Rozeee or Zak butters being sanctioned, no doubt they would be appealing

Good question.

I would say the reason for the discrepancy in punishments would be more along the lines of "you should know better" kind of thing - the AFL are a lot further down the path of understanding with racial inclusiveness than they are with LGBTI inclusiveness.

Geez I think this punishment is completely way over the top. Finlayson stuffed up but his actions in the immediate aftermath suggests this was more of a slip of the tongue rather than directed with malice.

I think an education based program rather than several game punishment has considerably more value here.

Well I'm glad the AFL went with the option that demonstrates that these 'slips of the tongue' (I mean. really?) have no place in the game whatsoever.

lots of what i’m reading right now going through these posts is that he’s so hard done by because of clarkson getting a $20k fine and a 2 week suspended ban & how something that happened 15 years ago which wasn’t homophobic but was directed towards a port player is of the same severity as someone being homophobic

Clarkson had 10 minutes to control his emotions, obviously a premeditated verbal assualt.
Finlaysons mistake was spur of the moment. As usual the AFL picks an easy target to make an example of.

So what we have learnt is that when you are copping abuse in the heat of battle, you should just wait for your chance to legally "Maynard" the perpetrator rather than use a swear word.

Or, if you must use a word to hurt their "feelings" remember that:

The AFL needs to come up with a definitive list of acceptable and unacceptable words to say on the Footy field complete with any ramifications.

The list will need to be tweaked for the AFLW where some of the unacceptable words in the AFL are perfectly fine and vice versa.

As for Clarkson well there was a "bit" of provocation before that incident I guess
