Opinion 2024 Round 1 Team

Yeah I could live with this and Murphy can be the sub

Not entirely sure it happens but a very viable option

The key for me is making sure Rankine gets 40-50% midfield time so if it doesn’t undermine that I’m happy

I think in games we were on top for long periods but lost last year it was because we didn’t have that second string midfield relief and teams got run ons against us and we leaked goals in clusters , I’m hoping this is less likely this year with what we’ve got

Murphy starts. 100%

You don’t get added to the leadership group, have 16 touches and kick 2 goals (statistically equal to his best game in 2023) and then get relegated to sub. No chance

I think sub will be either Pedlar, Soligo (if needing managed minutes) or Berry - gives us a midfielder to inject into second half of the game

Imagine selection if Curtin and Sloane were fully fit!!

Changing the goal pays a bit there. The continuity spiel has been going for several years - and yet we have shown we play kids that have a good summer. Soligo and Max being particularly good examples where there was no expectation during the main part of pre season they would get a game. We made them fit

Which experienced and RTG defender missed for Max and which mid for Sog?

Pedlar and Hinge can't be dropped for Rd 1, despite not tearing it up in preseason games. Seems a pretty settled 23ish players. With a few unlucky not to be named Rd 1.

Players who could potentially be dropped IF they stunk it up in rd 1 would be:

Murphy
Hinge
Sholl

Less likely;
Smith
Pedlar
Berry
Butts

Can't wait for the games to start!

I can’t recall - but I can clearly recall the surprise on here when Soligo got picked and the debate all summer about Max being too light and how he would take time.

Peoples idiotic opinions about lightness aren't relevant. And who was available but missed matters because these selection decisions aren't made in a vacuum, as implied by AFC. Factors have to line up. Frampton was favoured ahead of TT, despite TT playing the final trial game. And that was 100% not a talent decision.

Yep I think you’re right

With 2 weeks to go I think Soligo plays wing

Pedlar - he has to start , he’s a gun

Perhaps Berry starts sub , probably makes sense , allows Rankine more midfield time which is a must

People were adamant that Michaelanny wouldn’t play all year in his first season due to being too light

Quite a LOL in hindsight

After watching the two scratch matches live

My round 1 team

Rachele Thilthorpe Fog

Keays Tex Rankine

Scholl Crouch Jones

Smith Keane Milera

Michalanney Butts Worrell

RoB Laird Dawson

Sog Hinge Berry Pedlar

Sub McHenry

No Murphy. And the one spot I see him in is Scholl. Scholl is a better Wing/HB. And probably makes way for Curtin.

The renaissance of Berry pushing Murphy put

Torn between Borlase and Keane. Need Butts to play defensively against King. His size is needed. Went Keane as he is more athletic than Borlase.

McHenry is the perfect sub

Pretty confident this will be the 23. Sholl will start, we don’t really have anyone else who can run the wing better. Could honestly see us putting Soligo or Pedlar as sub but with Berrys emergence taking a spot in the middle we have an abundance of high forwards so Murphy should really be pushed out.

Murphy plays because they have made a position for him, not the reverse

Sounds like his one on one defending isn’t great, I can see that denting his confidence. Let’s utilise his strengths
I think he needs to improve that ability regardless though and it’s important to get him to be the best possible player long term

I think having specific types to play on is the key thing , younger 3rd tall type forwards initially

He’s been a bit interrupted so it will be good to find his feet in sanfl for a few weeks , develop then knock door down . Exciting times really

Max advantage is/was that despite being 192cm he had speed / agility to play on smalls which allowed him to play from start

Got a feeling that we might be taking pre season match form too much into consideration compared to what selectors will

Eg I think Pedlar will start and I wouldn’t be locking in Sholl and Berry as confirmed starters just yet

Wing is the most interesting spot for me, seems most of the rest of the positions pick themselves for now. Soligo plays if fit, so it's probably between Jones and Sholl for the other spot. I've not loved Jones's pre-season, he looks a touch slow/heavy. As for Sholl, I worry he's undersize but the coaching staff clearly feel like he provides value in terms of our ball movement. Imo he probably edges Chayce out – for now.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Laird and Dawson rested around the ground a bit more, like they seemed to be yesterday. Berry seemed to play a bit of half forward at times whilst still getting 11 CBAs, and could play that role when the season starts, extending the mid rotation a bit more than usual

The benefits of actually having quality mid depth
Berry CBA split was 1,1,6, 3

So clearly he got cba chances more once we mixed it up

If he’s selected rd 1 irs in his 1st half role as a forward who gives us an option to add mid depth if needed not a primary part of his role

Then as the year goes on he may get games as that genuine mid rotation if laird/dawson/crouch miss

I think jones will get the role as nicks likes the contested edge and jones will get credits for runs on the board in the role last year

pretty close IMO but Rankine will be a starting mid and Laird>Crouch starting at this stage. The wingers of Jones and Soligo make most sense to me keeping Soli around the ball. Jones played some terrific footy off the wing 2nd half of last year, and Hinge and Milera were both excellent as HBF's. Hopefully Hinge and Jones get back to this form quickly (otherwise Sholl will start wing over Jones who heads to the bench/sub). Keane more attacking flair takes CHB. Forward line picks itself but The Fog needs to impact more.

It is the last 2 spots of Berry and Sholl that seem most debatable but tend to agree they both play R1 based on pre-season form above Mc Henry etc. Murphy isnt a lock either. Curtin would have played if no injury issues as Nicks has shown he loves blooding talented youngsters in R1. Looks like a good team with admittedly a small bench/sub but with a tall forward line, many hybrid defenders that can play tall (Hinge, Worrell) and machine ROB its probably OK.

Hard to argue with this 22

Sub the role that could be most up for debate.

Interesting Nicks specifically mentioned they used McHenry in a sub type role so I wouldn’t be surprised if they view him almost as a specialist sub option (ie when comparing players they rate him higher when selected ting a sub as they would in same comparison when selecting a player in the 22- McHenry and Sloane prob both fit this). His output as sub last year was so much higher than it ever translated to a full game which isn’t the case for others

Fair point. At least it’s promising he was able to find the ball and really be threatening without needing CBAs, 10 and 2 goals in the first half

Pre season team selection is usually a very good indicator of our round 1 team.

The side is very likely to be the team we used in the first half of yesterday's game, plus a sub.

The only question mark for me is whether Soligo starts, he could have been brought back from injury only playing a half. And whether Keane replaces Borlase

Personally I think it will be the 22 from H1 yesterday, with Sholl as sub and Soligo in the 22. Borlase swapped with Keane

If we are worried about Soligo's ability to run out the game he could be a sub in/off option in round 1.

Looked classy when he came on later yesterday.

Agree with your side

Soligo plays , he looked good , has had a great pre season and has 2 weeks of training still
