it's funny coz on the dees pages we've been hyping him up for years. lol. damn, I guess the long streak of no father/sons continues.

I'm a little surprised considering he is already 200cm tall and looks to have good work ethic, jump and obviously a good family heritage.

He is a 50/50 draft prospect at best.

Nobody will be clamouring over him, but he might get an opportunity at either Suns or Demons. There won't be a battle for him though.

People on BF seem don't seem to rate him but I don't think you make the starting 18 of the U16 AA team by accident so Kalani must have shown some promise this year. He's playing junior footy for Broadbeach at the moment which has become a bit of a powerhouse in terms of junior development so that should help. Juniors definitely benefit from playing and training with other highly rated juniors and I suspect that will be the case with Kalani.

Assuming he stays on the Gold Coast next year, there's a fair chance he'll be selected as bottom ager to represent the Suns U18 academy team to compete against other northern academies and some Coates Talent League teams. His height would have been a significant advantage at the U16s level this year but once he comes up against 18 and 19 year olds in the CTL next year, he won't be able to rely on his height as much. 2024 is a big year for him because he'll need to improve his skills substantially if he wants to be on the draft radar for clubs. There's also the possibility that he may decide he wants to play for the Suns instead of the Demons ala Blakey choosing the Swans over North. Damien Hardwick would certainly be aware of him.

Seems a hard one to judge. With his height and athletic traits and the fact he’s already AA you’d think an early pick. But I guess things can change pretty quickly over next couple of years.
At this point he’s very much committed to the Dees. Again I guess things could change but you’d think it’s gong to have to be a big change on that front.

I don't think team results at the junior level are always the best indicator of the pointy end talent within a team. It's the old adage of 'a team is only as strong as its weakest player' e.g. Gary Ablett Jr was clearly the best player in the game between 2011-14 but the Suns were unable to qualify for the finals during that period. Take five random AAs from different parts of the ground and add them to a team full of 17 VAFA players and then have that team play against a mid-ladder AFL team. The mid-ladder AFL team is going to win over four quarters because collectively they can play better as a team. GAJ learnt that the hard way by trying to do everything in a team full of teenagers.

Was that the case with the Suns academy at the U16s championships last year? I'm not sure but having that many AAs named in a team that doesn't win all its games in Div II does suggest something has happened. We've heard about the strength of juniors coming through Brisbane's academy around this age group and don't forget they also had two AAs in their team as well. So I don't think it's unreasonable to put forward the theory that Brisbane's U16 academy was collectively stronger this year and it may even be the case that their two AAs are of a higher quality than the Sun's best two AAs (at the moment).

Next year will be telling as some of these academy kids will get the opportunity to play in the Coates Talent League against the best 18 and 19 year olds on the east coast of Australia. In fact, U16 AAs Zeke Uwland, Beau Addinsall and Jai Murray already did that this year by competing in several CTL games for the Suns and didn't look out of place when the Suns academy defeated GWV Rebels. Addinsall in particular was named in the bests during that match and Murray had a game against Brisbane's U18 academy where he kicked three goals. I find it hard to believe that a player can be named in the bests of CTL U18 game against a Vic team in April but is underserving of a place in the U16 AA team a few months later.

I also have no doubt Murray is good enough to be AA, but he played relatively poorly by his own standards and was selected on reputation alone. I rate Uwland, but he had a better carnival as a bottom ager the year before, but he was still pretty good - however Kalani White wasn't even close, that is a complete mystery what happened there.

The 2 lions lads that made it were their standout players, but I'd actually argue the bottom end GC Suns players were better than the Lions ones, and it was the Lions top end that won the game for them.

8 players from Div 2 to me is a bit silly though, but they (QLD) were runners up and had 6 x AA's at the national u15 school carnival the year before.

I know it's a bit biased, but this is a better All Australian Team from the u16s with this years talent

I think that's a fair breakdown. From what I heard and saw, Addinsall and Patterson were outstanding. We had been expecting Addinsall and Murray to be the standouts as they were the ones that showed the most in the U18 games but Patterson was apparently a lot better than Murray. That's not to say Murray was undeserving of an AA spot and you could probably say the same about Uwland. Not sure how Kalani White made the team either though, but can't help but think there may have been some nepotism at play there considering his old man's links to the Dees. In the end, we've got four players that were justified in their AA selection and one that probably shouldn't have made it. I suspect they'll all take part in the U18 program next year.

I figured that may have been the case that Brisbane's top end talent were better than Gold Coast's and that got them over the line.

That's really deceiving to brand them all as 'Div II players' and just make a blanket statement that you shouldn't have many Div II players in the AA team. Like you pointed out, Queensland were runner ups in the U15 nationals the year before so clearly there are several players in Queensland that are better than their southern counterparts in that particular draft class. We'll get a much better understanding of their true ability over the next two years as they compete against higher standard competition on a more regular basis.
