The AFL are a greedy, corrupt pack of dogs. Clubs like Glenelg produce good players every year for the AFL and play a major part of grassroots football. They do an outstanding job of education and getting a player up to AFL standard for very little reward

They shouldn't, neither should the VFL. However, Victorian football provides a significant chunk of the talent for the AFL, it can't just let the VFL decay as it has.

The AFL needs to restructure Victorian football, given the AFL is custodian over Victorian football. We need the AFL seniors and reserves level for the AFL competition, there needs to be a functional second tier system similar to SANFL/WAFL for pathways to the AFL which should be the VFL but they shouldn't be in competition with the AFL clubs.

AFL can't get involved with SANFL clubs. The AFL can not even get involved with grass roots development in SA due to the agreement it signed with the SANFL (similar to WAFL) where they have complete autonomy in their states as a condition of purchasing AFL licences and having teams play in the AFL.

The AFL runs football in Victoria, there is a very big difference.

The TAC Cup provides the "significant chunk of the talent for the AFL" from Victoria. The VFL provides fairly little. That's a significant difference to the WAFL and SANFL.

So many things wrong with your posts. The AFL is the custodian of ALL football, not just the VFL.
Victorian football does NOT provide a significant chunk of the talent. The u/18 comp which is BASED in Victoria does so you might weasel your way through that. If the VFL died the U/18s would still be the premier feeder of talent.
The AFL need to restructure ALL football in ALL States

Gold Coast are an AFL club. Port is a VFL club. The broadcasting revenue is paid by the broadcasters for the AFL games, not the VFL games.

The problem with the VFL is that clubs aren't adhering to the salary cap that has been put in place, there are more brown paper bags floating around the VFL stand alone clubs than there were at Carlton under Elliot. AFL player salaries aren't included in the cap so they have a horrible time trying to be competitive when AFL clubs have guys running around getting paid more than 2x their entire opposition.

The AFL needs to ensure there is a fair system, one that is viable, one which has rules enforced.

There are a number of players who have played in the second tier competition, in part or in whole. Guys like Ben Brown for us played for Werribee. Issac Smith played for North Ballarat. There are many players.

AFL Vic is a subsidiary of the AFL, as is AFL Tasmania, etc. Most of the VFL's funding comes from the AFL.

You are welcome.

The stakeholders of the AFL might get a bit pissy if the money being paid to watch them play is given to clubs of other leagues. Put yourself in the position of an AFL club or AFL player. AFL funds a fair bit of grass roots development but there are limitations. Is Port spending within their means? Would they submit to a financial audit? The AFL has always demanded that they have a significant say in how clubs are run that they are providing assistance to.

. Port's debt is not due to overpaying "spuds" but rather their social and pokie venue in the suburb taking a turn for the worst. Port is changing very quickly as a suburb and the old pub venue probably doesn't suit the area anymore. Port has been a very well run club for a long time and will survive but the lack of support / care from AFL VIC is disturbing. Time for Willy port coburg, North Ballarat and hopefully Frankston to tell AFL Vic to put some effort into their plight Otherwise we'll lose some important and historic footy clubs.

Glenelg are a bigger club than Port Melbourne. Port Melbourne play in front of a few hundred people. (And Glenelg supporters wouldn't make a thread on the AFL board.)

They could always join the metropolitan leagues though I suspect some of their supporters would rather die as martyrs than become 'normal' clubs.
 
Unfortunately these clubs in Victoria and WA are very close to going down the amateur route. Maybe that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Clubs would carry on existing, with the same name, jumper, generally at the home ground they've had for years, and playing against the same sides they have always. Fans getting in for $5 and not almost $15 would make it easier and maybe more alluring. You could even remove a few sponsors from fabled old strips.

Would you rather your club no longer exist, or exist in what is essentially the exact same league but with a lower standard of play? Then again the gap between some of the comps like the EDFL or the very best Sunday League sides and the state leagues is not that big. If you're playing for a bar tab at the end of the game, most people would rather do it for Port Melbourne or Perth than Maribyrnong Park or Old Collegians.

Promoting a few of the big VAFA clubs to make a 10 team VFA would be alright; Fitzroy back, Frankston back.

Excuse my ignorance of the VFL today, but do Port have a footy infrastructure below its ones & two's - who are the AFLPA expecting to pay the money, the AFL, the VFL, TV, the punters going thru the gate, Mother Teresa .... the 2nd tier is in trouble across the country !!

Vic footy needs to be independent of the AFL as SA & WA are & it should have happened post the 1990 move to a fully national comp. All State bodies need independence, not having the strings pulled by the AFL.
 
Offtopic, but I like watching state league footy.
Worked for a period in remote NT in a remote aboriginal community and they had a satellite TV set up in the house I was in that got all the ABC channels from round the country. With not much else to do, would watch VFL or SANFL or WAFL matches every weekend.
It's not commerically viable, but wish Fox Footy broadcast a few of these matches from each state league a week, even better would be live on a FoxFooty2, be better than just repeating AFL games all the time.

The problem with the vfl is the scrapping of afl reserves sides, the taking over of old vfa clubs and then running them as reserve sides, and then reintroducing reserve sides and scrapping the old vfa clubs.
