I watch most Eagles games...let me tell you, they have turned drawing a free kick into an art form.

Thats not a criticism, they seem to be able to shrug tackles and if they don't get away, an errent hand will be flung over a shoulder, the whistle is blown.

Hams, Selwood's, even kerr and Priddis....mark my words, more beer will be thrown at the TV in this game than any others this year.

To Make matters worse, they are a great tackling team, they don't give many away.

Tackle from the waist to the hips, much harder to raise the arm the lower down you tackle. Hit them side on as much as possible or rotate them in the tackle so they land on the ground side on so it is not in the back.

If some clubs work hard on milking frees then other clubs have to work hard on how to tackle so they don't give cheap frees away.

Yeah, it's infuriating, you can't always roll them either Tas as they drop their knees in to the dirt early when the player thinks they're going to bring them straight down resulting in a flop forward.

The crowd wins 5-10 frees a match too, the halftime free kick count in the Melbourne match was 21-1

Tackle with your body, not with your arms.

An arm hanging out away from the body is much easier to brush up over the shoulder than an arm held in close to your core.

That's because melb are deplorable not because of any conspiracy theory:rolleyes:

What ever helps you sleep at night buddy. Sure it wasn't anything to do with Melbourne putting in an absolutely insipid and undisciplined performance? Maybe the Demons should go back to basics and learn how to tackle properly.

Pretty much all 21 free kicks were there and most these boards were agreeing on the day that it was Melbournes poor tackling and not Eagles playing for frees.

I'm not denying they do play for them in instances against other teams, but against Melbourne? Please.

You can't always roll them but not everyone is a pro diver, you need to be careful about the ones identified with the jelly legs and hyper arms. If you come and tackle from behind in particular you should focus more on unbalancing them and/or restraining an arm so they can't legally dispose of the ball.

If you are second to the ball in Perth you will get crucified by the umpires. You have to be first to the ball, something the Dees didn't do. Last year we went there we had 30 frees vs 18 so you don't always get screwed but you have to be careful not to give them many soft opportunities to get free kicks, being second to the ball makes you very prone to giving a free kick away with soft in the back or soft too high free kicks.

I did have a similar thought - this is what happens when you're second to the ball all day, plus the frustration of being thrashed.

He does have a point that the umpires do sometimes whistle to the crowd, but there's not much anyone can do about it, so please for the love of god can we try to keep a lid on the moaning about it on Sunday night.

Honestly, I think we sometimes whinge about the umpires as much as the Bombres. Well, maybe not that much.

I'm subbing this now, because I have to leave the house.

What are the odds when I come back, this thread will be filled with Eagles supporters talking about some 'Victorian Conspiracy'?

We know they do it. Let's just not get sucked in and tackle around the waist.

Let's see if Ziebell ends up with some frees, I agree you definitely need to be first to the ball, and know that Melbourne weren't first and were deplorable... durrr.

Doesn't change the fact the WCE have the biggest Frees For differential in the league of +9.2 game, well above anyone else and it's +15 per game at home.

So be ready for some soul crushingly one sided umpiring at times...

The tactic they employ forces you to go for the hips, which is still to the ball carriers advantage as they can get their arms above it easily and move the ball on, workas perfectly this year as holding the ball is near non-existent at times.

I'll finish where I started, be first to the ball, nothing else will do!

The umpires paid fewer ducking/slumping forward frees in Rd 5.

Clarko's whining has assisted us this week:thumbsu:

We should just punch them in the face repeatedly behind play ala Joel Selwood and get away with it. I'm pretty sure the older Selwood deserves this fate more than nearly any Selwood in footy:thumbsu:

You can always run with the defence that he threatened to **** your 6 year old daughter. The **** has form.

We kind of bring it on ourselves with the tackling thing sometimes. Few blokes in the side who don't like to commit to the tackle and end up throwing a lazy arm out and give away soft high contact frees.

However Hams.. man. In Boomer's 300th he would crunch into the self-fellate position if he even suspected incoming contact. Goes straight into an armadillo ball and the umpires invariable fall for it.

In one way its not a criticism of West Coke, I mean they play to the rules and their strengths. On the other hand, its a blight on the game to have shoulder high tackles classed as head high. As soon as someone puts a hand over the should, heads are thrown back and whistles are blown. A suggestion to the umpires, report a few incidents and people willl stop playing for frees. Staging is a reportable offence...report it.

I doubt any of this tackling/staging concerns would beat in "frustration terms" Goldstein having his goal disallowed against Sydney

I reckon a few NMFC Plaz's were in massive danger when that happened!

Funny you should mention this watching us on tv. I have officially banned myself after watching 1st game this yr v Richmond and Hawthorn and it was only a pre season game. Sitting there watching the Richmond v Hawthorn game after our games had finished we got a knock on the door, it was the boys and girls in Blue. They had been told that there had been some yelling in the street had I heard anything to which I said no , but then said well I was yelling at the Footy a while back. They both giggled and asked who I followed , I told them that if u had to watch H' s Ruck work u too would yell , I also gave them a fixture of the up coming year and mentioned that they may want to note this down, well that bit is untrue but I should have. So now I watch only the internet with updating scores and bigfooty updates. Funny because at games I am much more placid, well to some degree anyway, least they know I am passionate :D

Very true Mr Reliable I did watch some of the Swans game locked in a room with the computer only thing I hit was the computer desk which almost broke plus my hand as well. The Eagles game I don't think I will watch any but tape on foxtel . Will be hoping for Bigfooty updates and the AFL site which updates every now and again.
