Reading about the Saints wooden spoons the other day, I was intrigued about other wooden spoon winners over the years and decided to dig a little deeper.

While doing so, I found there have been a few teams over the years who've produced one or more winless seasons. More so than the spoons themselves, surely this is the measure of a truly shit team.

Of those to produce winless seasons, two have already died a horrible death and you have to wonder why natural selection has spared the remaining candidates.

Anyway, here's the list:

St Kilda (1897, 1898, 1899, 1902) - The undisputed king of wooden spoons, also holds the record for most winless seasons. While their ineptitude is legendary, it should be noted that all winless seasons were in the club's infancy.

Norf (1926, 1931, 1934) - Together with Hawthorn, Norf were a disgrace to the 1925 entrants to the VFL, winning 10 of the first 11 wooden spoons on offer after their entrance. Norf takes the cake though, being only second to St Kilda in overall wooden spoons and winless seasons. If there was a Bay 13 in 1934 they would surely be calling for Norf to fold, a plight still faced by their supporters to this very day.

University (1913, 1914) - Seemingly entered into the VFL with the sole purpose of getting the Saints off the last rung of the ladder, University never really got the chance to find its mojo and was killed off. As this shows, they were pretty shit, however shitter teams (see above) both before and after them were allowed to remain in the competition.

Hawthorn (1928, 1950) - Its hard to believe that with all their zoning based success, Hawthorn were once a pathetic rabble, shaded only by Norf at the time for shittest team in the land.

Melbourne (1919) - It would appear that bruise-free football was not invented by the current day Demons, but in fact pioneered by their forefathers - the Redlegs. So shit was this season by the Redlegs that their dismal percentage of 43.0 has never since been beaten.

Fitzroy (1964) - The poor old Roys were the most recent team to produce a winless season in '64 and it all went downhill fast from there. Like University, their murder can be considered harsh when you take into account some of the shit produced by other teams on this list.

So there you have it people. The undisputed shittest teams in VFL/AFL history. Discuss.

Funny how St.Failure seems to top every conceivable measure of shittyness among AFL teams. Coincidence? Nay, I think not.

LOL at Norf for clocking up more winless seasons than University. Says a great deal about the culture of that club.

Hawthorn? Yes we were truly shit for many many years when we first joined the VFL. Thank God the Great John Kennedy Snr came along and changed all that!

Of course the team missing from the list is Footisgray.
Considering the Bulldogs have never, ever in their entire history finished on top of the ladder and won the minor premiership, have a lousy one flag to their credit and have literally gone half a century without a GF appearance I feel any thread discussing football failure would be incomplete without a special spot reserved for the Doggies.

OP, people in glass houses.

It's crazy to think that a club that doesn't exist anymore was less shit than the saints, bulldogs, and norf.

Ironically it was the Dees in 1981 who can thank the Doggies greatly for their last gasp after the siren win in Rd 3 over them that gave Barassi his only premiership points in 1981. So Melbourne of that season could well have joined that infamous club for the second time, and in a relatively modern era to boot.

Reckon GWS is a strong chance to join them in 2012 but.

So Scum Kilda kicked off their pitiful existence with a three-peat of winless seasons?

Someone should have put an end to their misery right there and then.

You mean you Googled wooden spoons and went to Wikipedia to see the list of winless seasons, thought it was funny and made a thread on BigFooty while forgetting you barrack for the Failscrap Bullflogs right?

At first you were like:

Two winless seasons? Nice work. :thumbsu:

As success challenged as the Doggies have been, we've never plunged to the depths of shitness of these other teams.

Damn! We really let the team down there.

Sorta made up for it in 2000 by not letting Essendon have the perfect season.

So how many of those teams have won more flags than the dogs.......

Three. But let's stick to the topic hey royals.

Actually 4 of those teams won\have won more flags than the dogs.

I have no problem with NM going winless in the early 30s -it's called being a new team.

So what is the dogs excuse for getting numerous spoons in the last 40 years and not even appearing in a GF for 50 years.....inexperience.

If only they had killed off Norf when they had the chance.

Forgive them Vlad...they knew not what they were doing.

I'm an old prick, and the last winless season was about 5 BL (before Les); so it's probably not all that relevant.

Spring chicken ... ;)

Will never, ever, be lived down :thumbsu:

That's seriously embarrassing - for Essendon. So proud of belting a bunch of 18 year olds. Reimers thought he was Leigh Matthews. :o

When we beat them I don't remember even raising a smile, so predictable was the result.

Maybe you can erect a statue for Hird if you manage to beat GWS this season? Possibly release a DVD double pack? Victory Over Infants or somesuch...

No, its only three. Please refer to this excellent thread should you require the education, but please stop derailing the theme of this thread.

Winless in the early 30s? What about the 20s? You stunk it up for 2 decades, winning 8 spoons (3 of them winless seasons) in the space of 14 years. Even St Kilda was pointing and laughing at you.

In the last 40 years, Dogs 2 spoons, Norf 1 spoon. In keeping with the gist of this thread it speaks volumes that Norf struggled to 1 win during that spoon year, while the Dogs had no fewer than 3 wins in theirs.
