Why do people call "Geelong" "handbaggers?"

Not just on Bigfooty, it's a throw back to the old term "Handbag Brigade", essentially saying they are soft as women.
They can blame Lou Richards for that one

Because Hawthorn were obviously not up to it. I congratulate Geelong, they played exceptional.
But to call Hawthorn soft is stupid. Our first gamer, Jed Anderson, done a great hit on Selwood as he came on the ground and he wouldn't relent in a game that seemed more and more lost.

Sorry bro, your excuses don't cut it. Hawthorn are as soft as a caramello koala; they appear hard on the outside but are ooozing softness from the inside. By the way, this softness is not just in the physical form, but also the mental form as is evident by the caramel coming from the head of the koala and not just the body.

As to the Handbagger question
Jealous bitter flog teams have often resorted to "going the knuckle" after they have been embarrassed by Geelong's superior football skills, and try to justify it with such comments as "Yer, we really stuck it up em"! and "It's a man's game"! as if being violent was more manly than being skillful

Not to mention the Hawks have owned Collingwood for so long now, its getting boring.

Comes from Lou Richards who thought Geelong players were soft and played bruise free football. A very homophobic/sexist phrase but it still rings true in 2019 as Geelong continue exploit their strangely shaped ground . Other popular insults were 'circle work softies', 'The pussey puss pusses' , 'soft surfies' and 'the cowardly cats'.

So 64 years back from 1988 is 1924, and probably for some time before 1924 the handbagger tag was being used.

Lou Richards was a draft dodging arseh*le who had several major meltdowns before he smoked it because he wasn't elevated into the Australian Rules Hall of Fame as a Legend (which he wasn't)
If he wasn't good enough to make the Collingwood Team Of The Century, why should the AFL elevate him to Legend?
I think Carlton nominated him for some VFL/AFL award, his own club couldn't be bothered. Now they (Collingwood) complain.

Ha, I remember this muppet up and about when Geelong won the flags. Looking at his post history he melted so hard after the 2013 QF loss to Freo he never came back. Can only imagine how much he melted when they lost the PF to Hawks.
