Re: why did luke ball leave st.kilda???is it true he didnt get along with someone?

He had some disagreement with Ross Lyon that we probably won't know the nature of til he retires. Certainly had something to do with him not getting games, but their relationship was certainly icy when he left and I'm not entirely sure that was the whole story.

He basically looked for a club that was a good fit for him, rather than being a good fit for his club.

He isn't the first player to do so, won't be the last.

Wow, thank you for the insightful addition to the discussion. Now you can suck on a lemon and sweeten up a bit.

I'm sorry, but which part of my statement made me appear emotive or bitter?

I was just answering the question.

In his last three years he was played as a tagger, a small defensive forward, then as a burst player. He never felt particularly excited about any of these roles, so he looked elsewhere.

But that's not the reason he left. Trying to paint him as selfish does make you look emotive and bitter.

Because he was getting shafted on his contract/gametime and role within the team. He was out of contract and wanted to go to Collingwood and Ross tried to screw him so he screwed back harder.

There appeared to be a personality issue between the two as well but that's pure speculation on my part.

I haven't painted him as anything, he didn't like his role?

Didn't want to associate with the likes of Milne and Montagna from all reports. Wanted to be at a club with a bit of integrity, not one that lauds the feats of dirty snipers like O'Dea.

The real question is why did he stay there so long?

If by role you mean playing midfield in the Sandringham Zebras, sure. Bottom line is he wasn't going to get a go this year and left. If he was still in your best 22 I'm sure he would've stayed, no matter what role Lyon wanted him to play.

I keep hearing this from both Collingwood and St Kilda supporters, but it's incorrect. The kids he perceived to be pushing up to take his spot didn't, he would of played this year.

Just because he perceived something to be the case, didn't make it fact.

He left because Ross Lyon is a moron.
Ross Lyon made him feel like he was not in the future plans for the Saints. Luke Ball is a man of great character and determination, he obviously felt he was not going to be given the chance to prove himself under a idiot.
As Mick Malthouse said, his football ability is great but his professionalism, attitude and leadership are things you don't just let go. Im just glad the saints did because he is such a great leader, and such a fantastic footballer and thats the type of player you want around your club.
Every game this year I have thanked Ross Lyon for being such a moron as the #12 for the pies is just brilliant.

lol st kilda should just admit that they stuffed up massively, if they hadnt left on the bench for so long in the grand final they may have won it, and now they lose a top quality player to a competitor for nothing

Why did Luke Ball leave St Kilda?...just curious to know
A lot of people this week have been mentioning how last years Grand Final loss will help St.Kilda, even though there is no conclusive evidence supporting that. Collingwood lost the 2002 and 2003 Grand Finals, but most famously in recent times was Geelong after they lost by 6 points in 1989, and then followed that up with losses in 1992, 1994 and 1995, so therefore it's important to win the first Grand Final before a monkey climbs on the back, and Collingwood has a chance to do that this weekend.

Anyway, Luke Ball was the St.Kilda player that took last years Grand Final loss worse than any other player, and for good reason too, but he now plays for Collingwood. He was probably St.Kilda's best player per minutes spent on the ground that day, but Ross Lyon only gave him 46% game time. When the game was up for grabs, Ball felt he could get his team over the line, but Lyon didn't give him that opportunity, so he felt helpless, which made the narrow loss even worse for him than his teammates, so he could realistically be the most determined player on the ground this weekend.

After the match ended, Ball felt that he had to move on, and his former St.Kilda teammates understood that he was thinking that way. Lyon was trying to squeeze him out of the team during 2009, and had lost faith in him for some unknown reason, particularly as the player Lyon had in mind to replace him has not come on at all. There was a clash of personalities between the two, and Ball needed the influence of a more positive coach such as Michael Malthouse than such a negative coach as Ross Lyon that was weighing him down and holding him back.

Ball requested a trade to Collingwood, but Lyon did not want him to go there which just made an uncomfortable situation between the two even worse. Lyon's view was that he could either be forced to stay at St.Kilda against his will, or be picked by Melbourne in the Pre-Season Draft, which was a terrible way to treat a former captain, best and fairest and All-Australian. Lyon was ignorant to the recent changes in the National Draft rules though which could allow him to still get to Collingwood, which is exactly what happened as I thought it would.

Ross Lyon didn't feel he was right for the team. Ball did.

Now Ball is home and feels welcome. Even more so, not only does he feel welcome, he feels, and IS; integral to the Collingwood football club.

He'll play a blinder even on one leg on Saturday.

Would LOVE for him to win the Norm Smith.

So we are all wrong and you right.....is this you Ross? Still trying to justify not getting anything out of ball. How is Geary going, I heard that he was the perfect replacement for Ball.

He left becuase he wanted more gametime and Ross could guarantee him that. Although he was offered three years, ross still would have put him in the 2s everynow and then and play him under 50 % gametime. Stkilda fans who are sooking and baging Ball for leaving are peanuts, how could you expect a player to stay at a Club when he is treated like that and hardly plays a couple of minutes of the last quter in the granny when he was killing it all game. Would you stay at a job when the boss has no faith in you and doesnt like you or would you go to a new job that is offered to you and makes you feel welcomed and wanted? I know which one I would choose.

David Armitage was one the main options to fill Luke Ball's role as well, and many St.Kilda supporters felt he was a better player when Collingwood drafted Ball. Armitage will be in Queensland next year after four seasons of showing nothing at senior level.
