Melboune players telling each other that last years grand final didn't really count since it wasn't at the MCG, and that they must win this year, while Essendon players are telling each other "Yeah honestly, I've had the odd Rotisserie chicken or two after 9pm".

Who was the footy manager pushed out that ended up at St Kilda?

Drain helped the Saints in their 2009/10 success after working at Essendon in the 2000 era. Maybe?
I don't know who they are referring to in terms of after that. Drain left at end of 2002. Can't remember who was footy manager after that. Hamilton and Corcoran were 2008 and beyond. Maybe Cato? Jackson?

Ah, Matthew Drain. Wonder the story there.

Some interesting points

We simply don't have anyone strong enough to their arms free in tackles and demand 2 on 1's -like a Bont or Petracca.

We have to work out the sideways (and backwards) ball movement to make the most of Parish's clearances and get some fast and deep entries into the forward 50. The extra seconds we are taking provide way too much time for opposition defenders and even then we aren't getting the ball deep.

No idea how they will do it other than try and get some ruck dominance and get the sweeper working off Parish as the go to in a more attacking/direct path to our goal. Hoping for some of that today with Draper's return to form.

Edit; clearly Rutten and co have given Shiel a blocking job to do in there for a reason. Given he's been dropped today will be seeing the likes of Caldwell and Hobbs go up against Bont, Libba Dunkley etc. We should expect to get hammered - but hopefully we will see some signs of coachability with these guys in this area for the future.

Watching the Melbourne game yesterday and was impressed by how every centre clearance winners would than go put touch on an opposition player so the player they have cleared the ball too has space. Count how many times today Essendon will win a clearance, and that player just become stationary while the opposition runs past him.

Others might disagree & I know times have changed, but IMO, this is an horrendous look... and it shows that one of the most embarrassing efforts that the club has put out in recent years (actually - one of too many embarrassing efforts, lately) just doesn't hurt some people enough.

Yeah I’m one that will disagree. No one wants to see players joking around and pretending like the game doesn’t matter, but we actually don’t know if that’s what happened because we have just about zero context for what was said or the history between the two players prior to the last 3 hours.

Like he could be talking to a bloke he was mates with in U18s and hasn’t seen for years, who probably cracked a joke or made a comment about the outcome of the game or something that happened within it.

What’s he supposed to do, if that is what was said? Punch him in the nose? Scowl at him and bite his head off? Show the opponent how much the jibe got to him? Maybe storm off the field and not shake hands with the opponents like a good sport is supposed to do?

You’ve already lost the game, why lose face and act like a child as well?

Not sure you can make judgment on a picture taken in a moment of time. Different if they are walking off the ground smiling and joking.

Ok, what do you think we should do?

All you talk about this change needs to happen, change needs to happen. What do you think the club has done the past two years? Change has and is happening as we speak. It takes time. Do you think Melbourne just popped up overnight? Richmond?
It's on this point where things get interesting... What response to take? The classic failed teams of late last century like the Saints and Richmond just turned over their football department every couple of years thinking that was going to achieve something. I don't believe in throwing the baby out with the bath water but that doesn't mean you are going to find success with a more nuanced approach. It also means you have to deal with rabid fans demanding wholesale change every five minutes. The logical approach to take is to identify strong key people and try to build on them. The trouble is that the wrong people tend to be good at cementing themselves into roles and are hard to shift. I don't know for sure but i suspect Campbell is one of those just by the content of his addresses to players etc. He talks so much shit you feel like you are drowning in it.

Andy and Darcy talked about this on their podcast and they made excuses about not seeing their friends for years. What century are they in, social media and phones has made distance virtually non-existence. Listening to them showed they have no self awareness and they don't give a shit about the criticism.
