after geelong moved out it was a trotting track until the 70's then it was pulled down and a research centre now occupies the site.

Isn't it Eastern Park, about five min walk from Eastern Beach?

From what I recall, the research center is opposite the old site, not on it. The whole lot has simply been removed. Where abouts is Argyle paddock, the cats original home?

In 1840 a suburb "was develloped called "Little Scotland" with its boundaries of Aberdeen,Pakington,Hope and Latrobe Terrace this area contained the Argyle paddock.By 1858/1859 the GFC was established and the first practice match took place on land "close to the Corio cricket ground , adjoining the agricultural society's reserve near the corner of Ryrie and Garden Street,East Geelong", ( what is know now as Eastern Park.)
"This land was considered a far cry from the Corio cricket Club's original ground which was on the waste land known as Chilwell Flat near the end of Gheringhap St now known as Kardina Park."Interesting to think our home now was considered a wasteland of sorts.

"Within a short period of time the land adjoining the Agricultural Society's reserve was considered to far to travel for players living in Newtown.Matches had been also played on Church Hill, an area in the vicinity of Gheringhap, Moorabool, Ryrie and McKillop, (sites now occupied by of St Mary of the Angels Church and the Geelong Fire Station). In 1860 a match was arranged against a Melbourne District team .The match was played on the paddock between the Argyle Hotel and Pakington".The Agyle pub is now now know as Irish Murphy's, so the paddock must have been be bounded by Pako and Coronation St

."It was considered advantagious because it was not too far from the new Geelong Railway Station,It had wonderful view of the bay and the You Yangs, plus a challenging sloping surface."
"Around 1877 the club had located a new ground ,The Eastern Park Site known as Corio Oval"

(information taken from the Road to Kardina-The story of the GFC)

By the way in 1878, the team was undefeated Champions of the colony and went on to win seven VFA Premierships in nine years.
I find it interesting that for what ever reason we dont count these flags but clubs like Collingwood drone on about their winning four in a row in the late 1920's. To me you either count every thing or we start counting them from 87.That's the year the current comp started to evolve into the national we have today.

Aberdeen Street in Newtown. It's now a rundown car park, and Irish Murphy's (used to be called the Argyle Hotel). Somewhere in that vicinity was a football park. No remnants of it now, though.

Whenever we drive past it I always point the area out to people.

That’s right, because it’s surprising how many people are unaware of where it actually is, and there are many others who believe Corio Oval is the oval located on the Melbourne Road at Norlane.

I was just wondering if anyone knew where exactly Corio Oval was located, i typed it into Google and from what i can gather it was located in Eastern Park.....but which oval was it??

Its odd that the GFC did not move back there after it was used for military training, the Geelong Trooters club then moved in before leaving for Beckley Park in the late 70's...interesting stuff.

Any help would be great.

Its eastern park, not sure exactly where in them. Somewhere near the botanical gardens id assume. None of the ovals around there are big enough for a footy oval

IIRC It was on the Western side of Limeburners Road, not where the current oval is but the next place along towards the bay. I vaguely recall the old trotting track as young kid.

Its no longer an oval.

Ah, ok.........thanks for that, do they have anything that would indicate where it once stood, isn't it where the golf course is now, sorry i am not really familiar with all of Geelongs street names as of yet.??

It holds some significance in the history of the gfc, it would be good if they had a plaque or something to recognise the site.

Geelong's very first home ground, from inception to 1878, was the Argyle Ground. It is now the site of houses, however it's boundaries can be imaginarily marked.

The ground was on the corner of Pakington and Aberdeen Streets and stretched to the Argyle Hotel. The Argyle Hotel - now Irish Murphy's - located on Aberdeen Street acted as the change rooms/social club post match.

So anyone who lives in Geelong who cares about the very first ground, just imagine a football ground between the Argyle Hotel to Pakington Street. That's about as close as you will get to finding the location of the ground.

Near the Bendigo Bank (is it still there?)?

Thanks for that, now it makes more sense.

Would've been a lot different if they'd moved back to Corio Oval after the war......prime real estate there.

Not really, the site should be parkland, not housing. Would have been fascinating if they had stayed there. Being located so close to the bay, it would been freezing on winter days with wind whipping off the bay.

I dont know KP can still be bloody horribel on the wonderful winter Geelong arvos. Will always remember that Freo game a few years ago. A bit cold is an under statement

Coldest day in Geelong for 26 years. Hardly a "wonderful winter Geelong arvo".

Yep. It would have been pretty much across the road (and presumedly through some trees considering the area would have been largely uninhabited) from the bank.
Across the road? I thought you meant it would be on the north-west corner of the Pakington St - Aberdeen St intersection, which would place it on the Bendigo Bank corner.

I went to the primary school on the corner diagonally opposite.

I cant see the relevance in regards to the diatribe re Argyle Oval.
Corio Oval was indeed at the bottom of what we now call Eastern Park.
All five ovals are numbered today, with Eastern Park No.1 being the closest to the High School. If Corio Oval was still there today it would be regarded as Eastern Park No.6
It was never a part of East Geelong Golf Club.
