I have collected $48 in lose change that I would now like converted into notes (and three 'dollar' coins), what do I do? Do I take in down to my nearest bank branch and "deposit" it? Will they charge me for that (the bastards)? Or is there another option?

I am stumped.

Some banks have machine designed to take large volumes of coins.

Ask them.

They will faff around and tell you they don't want to do it. You then line up to see the people at the desk and tell them you want to close your account. When they ask why you tell them you are a customer and if they won't accept LEGAL TENDER then they can go f*** themselves and you will do all your future banking (including all future house loans) elsewhere.

I have a tin of coins. Put all the gold coins in it that end up in my pockets. usually it gets to $2500 before I take it to the bank. This is what happens almost every time no matter what branch I go to:

Hi, could i have some of those plastic money bags to put coins in please
We don't have any
You're a bank, I'm pretty sure you do
Why do you want them?
I have a piggy bank with maybe $2500 in coins I want to bring in and deposit
Well go home, count how much you have, then come back so I can give you the correct amount of bags
So you want me to go home, count it all, then come back get the correct amount of bags then go home again and recount it into the bags? Why don't you just give me a whole heap of bags so I only have to do it once?
We don't have any.
No problems. Where can I close all my accounts?
Take a ticket.
Hi, I want to close all my accounts.
Sure no problems.
<looks up all my accounts and sees how many loans I have>
Why are you closing them? Because you pricks make shit loads off me every year and can't even supply me with some plastic money bags to put money in that I'm depositing in your mother f***ing bank.
Will since you're a valued customer...
If the teller gives me some plastic money bags is it deducted from her wage?
What's your point?
Regardless of how large my account is your people should just hand over money bags if your customer say they need them for coins
blah blah we're sorry etc

Then when I come back the next day with $2500 worth of coins, some other teller will be going "sorry, we don't take that"

wtf? You're a bank FFS. Then I go through the same process. Have been with other banks and they all more or less do it. Seems bank tellers want to pick and choose what work they do. "That might take time, can't be bothered, "Sorry, we don't do that""

massive wtf.

I do my banking with MyState (Tassie only) and they have coin counting machines in some branches. It's as simple as pouring all the coins in then getting a printed out slip which you take to a teller and have that amount deposited into the account of your choice. Surprised more places don't do that.

just go buy groceries and pay with it? If you embarrassed paying with coins use the self-service so no one notices.

What bank you with? It'll be free if you do it through them.

I know Commonwealth have machines, ANZ too. If you look up nearby branches it should mention a 'coin counter'. Shove them all in and off you go.

By the way I collected $200+, $48 is nothing.

It's true banks have these coin counting machines (works like a sieve) but after it goes through the sieve the bank tellers typically think they are above putting it the plastic money bags.

let me know how you go because everytime I go to a bank I just get 'tude.

Don't you have these things in Australia?

coinstar.jpg

A lot of supermarkets here have them. You just dump your coins in and it prints a receipt for you to take to the checkout. It charges you something like 8c a dollar.

I wish we did! They look so cool!

I cannot see why people use these things... charging you a fee to have your own money.

I work in the family business I guess a milkbar would be the best way to describe it.

Anyway we are also an licensed Australia post outlet so have a note counters, coin counters etc. As quite a lot of money passes through.

About 18 months ago the bloke who lives across came over abd said he was cleaning out his shed and asked if we could count the lose change he was finding.

I said sure as he was a regular and he brought over two small buckets of change. I exclaimed what a good haul it was. He said quietly (he was a quiet guy) he has more he will bring over later.

By the end of the day after bringing a bucket over every hour or so he had accumulated over $2200 worth of lose change!!! We gave him the cash and sent it off with Armaguard the next day

Any way not really relative to OP'S question but I thought it was a good story to fit the thread.

$48 is chump change mate surely not that hard to find someone to do it. Spare change always comes in handy to random small businesses.

I buy bread from the bakery with my shrapnel. They love me. $3.80 for a loaf of bread so I suppose they go through 20c pieces very quickly with people paying with notes. 10c and 5c I collect up and when they fill the compartment in the car I take it into the local CBA and put it through the coin counting machine. Usually pays for a decent lunch.

Are you banking in the 80's or something?

Pretty much all the banks now have a machine and in my experience if you have an account with them they don't charge you

I was but now that my time machine broke I will have to settle for banking in 2013.

It still takes them time to tip it into the machine and then I think they still have to divvy it up into bags (don't think the machine does that?)

This has happened to me across a number of ANZ branches with no exceptions. Bank staff are instructed to heard people towards online banking so there's a lot of push bank.

Try going into your bank with $2500 worth of coins. I'm pretty confident you'll get push back.

Fair enough I normally go in with around 1k and all the machines i have used are DIY when you're done it prints a receipt and you take that to the teller.

Never seen a DIY machine. Do they just count it or do they also somehow split it up into $10 lots?

It just counts it via a big conveyor belt arrangement and puts it all in big bags in the machine (the kind movie bank robbers use just without the $$$) when you're done it shoots out a receipt detailing your totals and you take that to the teller for processing

We still had pennies here. Pain in the arse.

Yeah I remember hearing somewhere (CGPGrey video on youtube?) that coinstar is about the only place in North America that will accept pennies, in terms of machines anyway. So for pennies I could see the use MAYBE if banks don't have coin counting machines there. Also as a sidenote good on the Canucks for getting rid of pennies.

I haven't done it for a few years but the NAB typically used to restrict depositing large numbers of coins to quiet times.

I'd just ask for the bags and go home and fill them up with the correct amounts take them back and they'd just weigh them to make sure they were correct.

I had a post office for a few years and I used do keep a list of what each coin denomination weighed in its correct bagged amount.

5c = $2 lots
10c = $10 lots
20c = $10 lots in a bag or $4 lots in a roll
50c = $10 lots
$1 = $20 lots
$2 = $50 lots

A machine that charges you 8 per cent to convert your coins to notes? Sounds great :rolleyes:
