"FREMANTLE SHARKS EST.1987
After the West Coast Eagles were officially granted a VFL license, some other teams in the WAFL made it a priority to get in on the action while they still could.
South Fremantle and East Fremantle, two strong clubs with a storied history and a cross-town rivalry spanning decades decided to put their differences aside and come together to rival the emerging West Coast Eagles in the soon-to-be Australian Football League.
With money coming in from WA government grants, sponsorship from Holden and fundraising by enthusiastic supporters, it wasn't long until Fremantle caught the attention of the AFL.
In 1987, South-East Fremantle Football Club was officially offered a license to join the national competition.
It was decided that the new Fremantle team would retain the East's moniker of "Sharks" while the jumper would keep the iconic red vee of the South.
With the inaugural season of the AFL fast approaching the Fremantle Sharks will need to make a great impression on the league in order to establish dominance against their intrastate rival, the West Coast Eagles."
