Quick Trivia:

Do you know who we were going to pick instead of Scott Hodges for the second time in 1995?

James Fantasia was overruled, but he was dead set on taking Brent Harvey

100% true

We were going to take Brent Harvey in the 1995 draft before a last minute overrule
I thought Robert Shaw did a good job of list management.

Up until this moment...

I will say this: no bad player ever kicked 11 goals in a senior AFL level game

He certainly wasn’t a bad player but when you saw him live alongside Modra, it really did reveal why he couldn’t make a good fist of it at AFL level.

I don’t think there was one attribute Hodges had that was better than Modra.

He wasn’t a better mark, he wasn’t a better kick, he wasn’t as athletic.

Maybe he was stronger. Maybe.

I was much better off having not known this.

I liked Burgess at West Adelaide. Don't mind us bringing him in. Hopefully another Hinge bonus pick up. Certainly prefer us to go down this path for KPDs rather than using our first round pick.

Please don't post the Why not both? .gif

What’s with the dearth of big men that has is recruiting Gold Coast reserves, clubs shelling out for ratatouille and McKay?

Are there no big men playing reserves around Australia? Anywhere? No basketball converts? No Irish?
With the money involved in basketball in the US/Europe and in cricket in the T20 comps, the dual sport guys are becoming more likely to stick with their other sport.

Hodges was a leading forward in the style of a Dunstall or Sumich. Hodges was every bit as good in a 1:1 as Modra meaning he had strength and short term speed off the mark to get away from the defender. Modra had the obvious additional freakish nature of being a sensational pack mark with an unbelievable ability to read the ball while in the air with freakish hangtime. Players have played the game that have equalled Modra in the air and others were equal to him in the other areas of forward craft. But there has never been a forward before, during or since that had it all. Modra couldn't be faulted. Ablett, Dunstall, Franklin and Locketts longevity are the only reason Modra isnt talked about in the same breath.

So to cut a long boring story we all know short its unfair to compare Modra to anyone. Hodges was a gun in his own style and would have been a genuine star of the competition had he been in his own forward line for an extended period of time away from the likes of Modra.

Yep Hodges was a gun.

Hist first three years 91-93 had a lot of injuries but still kicked over 100 goals in those 3 years. Mods came along and surpassed him and Hodges said he didnt want to play AFL anymore after 93 and falling out with Cornes. Two big SANFL years between 94 and 96 kicking mutliple centuries had him recruited again in 96. Kicked 100 goals that year as well but Mods kicked 75 in AFL and Hodges was still second fiddle in case of an injury.

He was the leading goal kicker in the VFL this year and last - seems like a waste putting him down back.
Not really. We have Murray out for most of the season, Butts coming off a broken foot and down on form anyway, and I think Borlase was exposed at AFL level personally. Keane looks like there may be something there but we can’t put all our eggs in that basket.

Meanwhile at the other end of the ground we have three high quality key forwards in Walker, Fogarty and Thilthorpe, the latter already starved of opportunity down there, and Gollant coming off a 42 goal season in the SANFL.

He might be a possible AFL option if he plays down back, up forward he’ll have a 60 goal season in the SANFL instead of the VFL, so what?

He's still contracted at GC so he likely wouldn't have come over unless we could provide more opportunity. And we have more opportunity down back. Just seems odd to use a proven goal kicker in that way, they don't grow on trees.

I don't watch much Suns reserves, I guess.

We have got us someone who is a solid key position player depth & not likely to give up much.

Given our injury to Murray & Butts has had his issues, we need more cover, so he is a very smart pick-up imo.

That was desperate times for GV in Ruck though, let’s not kid ourselves that’s a genuine string to his bow.
I doubt we will be playing him in ruck, given all our other options.

I am sure it will get done but with today's pick swaps any guesses where it will land?

I think GC would only want future picks? So is it future 3rd? Future 4th? Swap of future seconds?

I don't think it should be as simple as passing on the Mcadam pick to GC.

Should be almost free.

Probably something like Burgess + F4 pick for a F3 pick.

Otherwise, he can be steak knives in whatever deal we can do for 10 or 17.

I was just thinking this as I read the thread title.

Bottom 10 team reserves players don’t request trades. They get delisted and thrown a lifeline. If they’re lucky.
