Maybe the accused is just saying what he is saying to protect his family in India and Australia, and plans to suicide in India or Australia, before the case gets to trial. Hoping that in avoiding a trial (or pleading guilty), his family and their family and friends, will be left with the belief that he is, or is probably/possibly innocent of the crimes he is charged with, and that he is just a victim.
