WESTERN Bulldogs have locked away premiership forward Toby McLean to a new two-year deal.

The Herald Sun can reveal the crafty goalkicker signed a contract extension on Thursday tying him to the club until the end of 2019.

McLean, 20, played 15 games last season including three of the club’s four stunning finals wins.

The livewire forward made an important contribution late in the season after overcoming a foot injury, averaging 19 possessions over his last four matches.

McLean said he was thrilled to sign the new deal early after starting pre-season training last week with the rest of the first-to-fourth year players.

“I’m very excited to hang around for a few more years,” McLean said.

“I don’t think there’s any place I’d rather be. Everyone is excited to be back.

“We’ll definitely be hungry again and we’re very much looking forward to 2017.”

List Manager Jason McCartney said McLean, who was taken with pick No.20 in the 2014 national draft, had made a sparkling start to his AFL career.

“To play such an important role in our recent finals campaign after just 19 career games is a testament to his ability, hard work and dedication,” McCartney said.

“He is just a great club person and we look forward to seeing him continue to develop over the coming years.”

Tom Boyds contact claims another scalp
Has completely ruined this club..... Success wise, list management wise, financially - you name it, he has caused it....

Look at his free kick ratio FF to FA and averages of FF and FA for the year.

Unbelievable and part of what makes him a major asset. Just destroys opposition flow and movement. Last minute of the prelim (or very close to) and the grand final were two of those frees.

This year he had a higher free kick to possession ratio than Joel Selwood without giving nearly as many away as Selwood (both had over 10% of their possessions from frees). Think about that for a second - and realise that he does this with the opposite of what Selwood has (he's targeted like Thomas rather than protected like Selwood).

Great news! Toby is an exciting player. Gee our forward line looks really formidable now. Will be interesting watching how Cloke and Crameri go there.

Pity there is no stat in Football for nous and smarts as Toby would excel in both.

Watching the final series again made me more appreciative of him as a player and what he brings and he was a key to our success.

Nice to hear he has decided to re-sign. I am glad we will be seeing him in the Red White and Blue applying his craft.

Toby McLean is a good player and deserves his extension,
but it would be nice to cut out the drop and lift tactic for
countering tackles as it makes me sick to watch people
openly flaunt the rules of the game.

Disagree. That is the AFL's responsibility to rectify, not his (i.e. they could have a specific rule against that drop, lift and wrap motion).

He should do whatever he can to be a contributor to our team, and that tactic has proved valuable for us on numerous occasions.

I understand what you are saying gansta deluxe, but in round 9
Vs GWS Zac Williams ran past and did not tackle, but Toby
still went into his move by himself and it looked so bad i mean
genuinely embarrassing Commetti was trying to find words to
describe it and in the end said " Oh,went to ground a bit
easy there". It was horrific. In the end certain players should
wear a badge that says " Do not tackle, will cheat ".

But that's just it: it isn't cheating.

Perhaps it should be, but that is another debate. I think questions about the (lack of) morality on his behalf are a bit overblown as well. It is a sport, it is within the rules, and the only person he risks hurting is himself by doing it.

Toby should maximise what he can bring to the team with that move until they outlaw it.
