They got Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin for 1, 35ish and 50ish.

Netted Hodge and Mitchell for the Hawks who eventually got Croad back after he failed for Freo.

At the time, it was a massive trade and Croad was a gun young forward in a prelim final Vic team. Freo were coming off the Wooden Spoon.

Freo also had a priority pick (4) which they used on Polak, by all reports they rated him the highest either way, hence pick 1 was in play.

The top 6 of 2001 draft was pretty tight - Hodge was projected as low as 5, Polak as high as 3 (WCE, took Judd).

So while it definitely burnt Freo, it was a calculated punt rather than a horrendously bad deal at the time.

Was made infinitely worse by the fact that we picked up Mitchell with one of the picks.

Had we selected someone at 36 who didn't make it, Pick 1 for Croad and McPharlin wouldn't have been so bad

if thats the dire reality then theres a strong argument your club isnt even viable....
Yep. This argument that GC are smart to pay a massive premium for anyone who wants to come since a regular pick 2 might leave... that means the club is rooted.

Also ridiculous is the official club line that "well we have a lot of other good picks." That doesn't justify throwing one away!

Worst part of Weller getting pick 2 is the rampant over rating of even more players this time next year.

"Lets trade Corey Ellis for pick 6."

"Ellis isn't worth anything near that."

"WELL LACHLAN WELLER WAS WORTH PICK 2."
Could make the same argument in re Cameron or Gibbs.

"We want a first rounder for Willie Rioli."
"A first rounder? You're kidding yourselves, he's a 23-year-old goal-a-game small forward with some tricks."
"YEAH WELL CHARLIE CAMERON WAS WORTH PICK 12. HAND IT OVER SUCKA"

"Rory Sloane wants to come back to Victoria and has nominated our club. Let's get this done."
"No worries. We think two first-round picks is a fair price."
"Two first rounders?? He's not going to be a 10-year player. The bloke will be 29 at the start of next season."
"UM HELLO McFLY, HELLO ... BRYCE GIBBS RING A BELL? PAY UP CHUMPS"

I can so see this happening. For years its all been about the draft picks - is there a subtle shift in the era of free agency and weaker premiership teams where players are becoming more preferred as many teams fancy their chances with a few handy acquisitions?

Pick one for dubious talent for 2018 and pick twenty four for a great star in 2025.. that is what I call a grand
investment..

hmm it is a banal lottery and crown would do better.. or would they..?

dare you to tell me to shutter up and stop being hyper offensive..

It looks even worse for GC when you combine the two deals they made with Freo:

Dockers get Brandon Matera, Pick #2, and a future 3rd round pick, Suns get Lachie Weller and Pick #41.

There was no need to include Pick #2, Suns!

Gold Coast got the future third, not Freo. Probably slight overs for Matera who could possibly have been a DFA, but not enough to offset the massive overs they paid for Weller.

There was an entire thread this season dedicated to Richmond giving up Pick 6 to Gold Coast last trade period for Dion Prestia.

Revisit in a year and see if Pick 2 was so bad for Gold Coast to get Lachie Weller. Looks about the same to me.

You're kidding right? Prestia is far better than Weller!

Prestia had come off two injury plague seasons. Weller's got a lot more upside because he was traded at a much younger age - so I'm not kidding. They're different kinds of players - i'm just saying if you look at that thread and at how many posters were quick to judge that Prestia was a horror deal for Richmond.

Same club - they got a 6 last year for Prestia - they gave up 2 this year for Weller - not such a big deal as people are making out.

Thing is, Gold Coast really have no need for picks. They had 4 top 10 picks last year. They've already banked a first rounder next year and have pick 19 this year. For them, Weller would be worth more than yet another top 10 picks that wants to go home in a few years.
Although in isolation, the trade is ridiculous, it does make sense from a Gold Coast perspective.

21 vs 24 isn't exactly far younger. Prestia also showed more potential at GC than Weller has. Not arguing that pick 6 was a good trade but it's still a fair bit better than this one.

Some perspective, we got Tom Mitchell for 14. There is a gulf between 2 and 14. I can't see Weller coming close to Mitchell's output next year.

Admit it, you got away with murder. Not blaming Freo, purely GC's idiocy.

"Oh we have all these really really good '1st round picks'..... so we can just throw a pick 2 away like its nothing".... please.... what absolute nonsense!

Who did Freo pick up for pick 1 back in 2001?

Had it just been pick 1, gaining one of our best ever players in Luke Mcpharlin would have almost brought it back to even, certainly not a worst ever type trade but we gave them our second and third round picks (in a 'super draft') along with it.

Turns out that's what happens when you go into a trade period with no coach and ask Cameron Schwab to fill in.

Still Freo's worst trade is still one of their very first, offending Andrew McLeod and trading the right to select him for Chris Groom.

Geelong sacrificing youth development just to bring back a former player that won't help them win a premiership.
They have to go all out while Selwood and Dangerfield are still upright, but yes, in years to come they might wish they'd have gone down a slightly different path.
