Week after week, year after year we repeat the cycle of hope and despair as Saints supporters, and as a club, we consistently fall to the St Kilda Curse.

I often wonder every now and then over the years as to why we are so success starved.

Is it the culture?

I mean take a historical look at our inception and track record. We were never a serious football club to start with, the usage of Junction Oval maybe the reason we even exist as a football club to this point. With such mediocrity belying our inclusion into the VFL, we managed to after 85 odd years as a football club, win a premiership.. by a point (not including the format that lost us the 1913 GF).

Or is it a curse?

Multiple brownlow and coleman medalists. Even dual and what would be triple brownlow medalists.. Champions.

Greatest goal kicker of all time. Brownlow medalist. Champions.

The 1997 GF. Favourites, form, Lazar, Everitt, Winmar, Harvey, Ellen, Jarman...

2009. The goal post. Later the goal review system comes into play.

2010. The bounce. The draw. Later there would be no more GF replays.

Inept adminstations. Coaches. Off-field indiscretions...

The Saints Disco, the Animal Cage... the party culture... If you can't beat em... eff it..

But so much pressure...

We used to say and make fun of those with the 3 teeth who had the 'colliwobbles' (i.e. constantly making and losing GF's), but you've at least got to give yourself consistent opportunities to win rather than live in the hope of winning that one game once you've made it. The pressure it creates inevitably creates so much pressure it must be unbearable to players and staff coaching in that environment. I as a supporter remember curling up in a ball in bed after losing the 2009 GF. Day to day i eat pressure for breakfast, but how much $$ would you and i give up to see the saints win a premiership in our lifetime?

Just one premiership, that's all i/we ask? How much? Where do i sign?

But what if?

We aimed to throw off the shackles of wanting/needing to win the next premiership and just aimed to be successful. Give the fans opportunities most week to go and watch their club play exciting good football more than not as a vehicle of entertainment.

I mean you can argue black and blue what is the measure of success one way or another, but would you really choose one certain premiership every 60-80 odd years filled with mediocrity, pressure and pain for sustained yearly 'success' that begets constant opportunities to play on the big stage and by pure numbers, we statistically draw closer and closer and closer to winning....??

First Steps First.

Watching and reading this forum only perpetuates the commonality that is seen from those externally looking into the club. There is a constant malaise here amongst the supporters. So many people throwing their hands in the air calling for blood, saying they have the answers and that even blind freddy could do better, threatening to walk, denigrating our own inner sanctum and players alike.

As much as you want us to succeed, you and I do not have all the answers, we do not have all the information and we are not part of the inner sanctum.

There is no magic wand, Rome wasn't built in a day, we've had a bit go against us this year and out list is still pretty young and inexperienced with a lot of upside still. Out club is a business and it's looking a lot better off field already for this upcoming season.

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I remember my dad telling me that an Aboriginal put a curse on Spider Everitt when he played for us, which (fortunately) followed him when he left us.

Can't remember what he did to deserve it, though.
Called Scott Chisolm a petrol sniffing Black campaigner if my memory serves me correctly. Spider said this to Chisolm while Spider was apparently good mates with Winmar as wello_O
Great player Spider.
Great dick head as well.

''Day to day i eat pressure for breakfast"

Is that you Thommo?

Some of those old black ladies can put curses on for sure. I know one bloke who has his manhood disabled for disrespecting an old girl. When he made right she removed the curse and all came good straight up.
Wonder if they can remove other curses????

Well said there Darkhour.

We can only go on the facts at this point...speculation just winds everyone up and we tend to jump at shadows.

It's still early days but as you say Darkhour….the off field changes certainly has me feeling much more positive than 4-5 weeks ago.

Part of the problem is that the first sign of a storm our administration cut down the rigging and throw everything overboard. In poor times, good clubs hold steady and put on a stable front. We just crumble and shit ourselves.

I don't get it mate, what do you want?

Bitching and moaning about everything at the club from the president right down to the groundskeeper all year, one would think you'd be cheering trout getting gutted and Richo and his gang of underachievers getting stiffed, but oh NO, now we've "crumbled and shat ourselves"

Cutting down the rigging and thrown everything overboard? Pfffff. Just changed tack that's all. So now you'd be happier if we did nothing?

The club made a few catastrophic decisions, a few good ones and this kind of change is never nice and easy or neat. It will look bad, but it's the best way forward.

This year has been long enough without you and Moanman and co sniping away. It's just words and everyone's got the right to blah blah blah but don't you have some kind of internal filter that limits all the doom talk?

I suppose you'll be very unhappy with whatever decision the club makes in the next few months so I can have the pleasure of reading about just how clueless you think the club is. I'd rather watch a team full of Gearys Gilberts and Armitages.

Oh god I think I just did.

As I said above, its easy to comment from the outside in, but you and I don't know the full picture. If anyone wants to make a difference, then get facts, get data and raise your concerns to the club and via petition etc. There are proactive ways of making a difference.

Nicky Winmar s dad passing away grand final week and Stewie loewes sister spending the night in hospital the night before the 97 grand final . These type of stories only seem to happen to us . I think all of this stuff has magnified 5 times in the last two years with us taking a dive and bulldogs and rich popping up and snatching one . It’s been like the perfect storm unfortunately.

Yep, we just need Melbourne to win one just to rub it in...

No I want some one to fix the mess up. It's wearing very thin and what they are doing gives me no hope for any kind of future success. I admire your strong faith in the club, I find them frustrating and can't see any end to it in the near future.

Someone said football clubs are in the business of selling hope. I just want some of that. I'm glad your happy withe where we are at.

The problem is imo we haven't had a great administration leading the club since Butters. Now we have Basset and Lethlean, I feel a while lot more comfortable the correct decisions will be made.

Come on Gringo, who the hell would be happy with where our footy club is at right now? Not me. But I'm not a believer in curses or stereotypes or doomsday or fatalistic wailing. We were shit for most of our history, except when we weren't. Our club made poor choices except when they didn't.

My wife tells me I never do anything or I never remember important stuff. Except when I do.

Paul says: When I find myself in times of trouble..., there will be an answer, let it be.
John says: Relax your mind and float downstream, it is not dying.
Hell even Frankie says: Relax

Those scousers - as usual - had the right idea!

Some more piffling platitudes:
Hope never dies unless you want it to. I am sure that Bassat and Lethlean's changes will benefit St Kilda, even if there are a few potholes on the way. I was sure about Summers and Finnis too, and they delivered - kind of. Trash reputation squashed, Seafood Balls-up squared away, Cancerous Stadium deal cut out. They even (briefly) got us a blockbuster. They just held onto Richo a couple of years too long and let the footy coaching team and recruitment team stagnate. They let talented people in the media/marketing dept go. They didn't drive standards hard enough.

It's all progress, even the rubbish stuff. The Road to 2018 was nearly a road to ruin but the club is better than it was 4 years ago in many ways. The footy sucks but it's a transition period, the recession we had to have if you like. Even top scientists have experimented and failed loads of times before they get their Eureka moment, and this isn't even science.

This club was shit for most of pre-history because we were poor, end of story.

We had a few moments of bad luck with Grand Finals but the sad truth is if we'd kicked 5 more goals in each, those moments would have been inconsequential. We just didn't play well enough to dominate. Besides Nicky and Stewie in 97, Schneider and Milne in 09 and Milne again in 10 we had other players capable of winning the game, where were they?

Every year is a clean slate, new players, new approach. If my hopes get crushed again and again, I will keep hoping. Life is all transient anyways, the only happiness you'll find is that which you make for yourself, so why pop your own balloon?

Dunno if what I'm wrong makes any sense whatsoever, too tired to go through and check it.

2009 wasn’t a curse. When you have *******s who tried to kick the ball into the yarra rather than just over the goal line on the full about 6 times in the first quarter and miss, you don’t deserve to win
