Whatever happened to this guy? He wore number 14 I think. I have never forgiven him for not handballing to Malcolm Blight who could've broken Doug Wade's club goal-kicking record for most goals in a season by a NM player. In the final quarter of the the final round of the season, Phil Kelly could've handballed to Blight who was all alone 40 or so metres out, but decided to go it alone & he missed. I still can't get over it.

Came over from East Perth with a lot of hype (Sandover Medal??) and didn't really live up to it. Wore 14. Can't remember the Blight incident.

Played 17 games in 1981 for 12 goals
Played 16 games in 1982 for 12 goals
Played 18 games in 1983 for 8 goals
Played 9 games in 1984 for 8 goals
Played 1 game in 1985 for 1 goal
TOTAL OF 61 GAMES FOR 41 GOALS

Phil turns 50 on the 26th of August this year...Happy Birthday knackers!!!

Phil Kelly commenced his league career with East Perth in 1975. After a slow start, he came good in 1978 under the coaching of Barry Cable. Kelly later admitted that Cable had inspired him to much greater levels of commitment and motivation, and this paid off handsomely in the form of Sandover Medal wins in both 1978 and 1979, together with the club's 1979 fairest and best award. Playing on a wing, Kelly was one of the Royals' best in their 1978 grand final win over Perth. He could also do a job on the ball, and knew how to kick goals, amassing a total of 73 in his 109 senior appearances for East Perth. In 1981 he crossed to North Melbourne where, after a fine start, his form fell away owing to a persistent hamstring complaint. He played 61 VFL games and booted 41 goals for the 'Roos in five seasons. He also represented Western Australia 6 times. In June 2006, Phil Kelly gained selection as a wingman in East Perth's official 'Team of the Century 1945 to 2005'.

I think it was against Collingwood. I remember throwing down my can of VB & it exploded all over this elderly woman in front of me. I instinctively looked at the guy behind me to give the impression it was him who threw the can - worked a treat.:thumbsu:

Well this wouldn't have been to break the record then. He equalled the record in the SF v Hawthorn (Dermott Brereton's 1st game). He started that day on 98 and kicked 5 to take him to 103...

Does this mean that if a batsman scores 60 runs from now on he'll be credited with a century?

I was a fan of Phil Kelly. Actually was a fan of many Sandgropers that came over in that era... how dissappointing were many of them when all look back... :(:o

I recall in a game against the Blue Baggers (AS), Cable put Phil Kelly at CHF in the opening quarter vs then state CHB, Val 'Woofa' Perovic, and Phil turned him inside out...booted 3 in the opening stanza...taking one handed pearlers...the crowd went wild... after that...don't recall Kelly getting much of the ball.

I think we lost that game...I'm sure it was a different game to when Micheal Reeves made an impressive debut in front of the sticks... Reeves was the Gil Tucker (Cop Shop) of the VFL back then. Go mutha!! :D

Getting back to Phil Kelly, think of Simmo's laconic kicking style, moved like Shane Clayton and looked like a thin David Dench.

I had 'Phil 14 Kelly' on my duffle coat. His first dozen or so games were gold and from then on I was sold. Poor bugger had injury after injury after from about midway though his second year.

And yep, Woodson, good get. He slayed 'em at CHF in that opening term against Carlton. I thought he kicked four though. Maybe my memory is trying to justify my decision to go with a bloke who in the end turned out to be a bit of a flop (through no fault of his own, I might add).

I also had #14 on my North sloppy joe top.. the merchandising for kids in the early 80's was premium QUALITY !!! Remember those clappers ?? Sensational...anyway, the injuries really crippled Phil Kelly...I'm just wondering if there was a CURSE down there... Peter Jonas could of been anything...possibily the #18 of the 80's !! yeah, I know...paul van der ha ha ha

I remember Kelly playing mainly on the wing. He was one of several sandgropers that came over in the late70s-early 80s to North. Couldn't kick at all with his right foot and got caught many times because of this deficiency. As mentioned his career was severely hampered by injury.

Personally, I referred to him as The Gang.

Really ? I used to call him Jaclyn Smith.

I also used to tie an onion to my belt.

Which was the style at the time.
