while it will go down as one of the best games in afl/vfl history and believe me after the events off the field at stkilda it was great to see why we all love this game and why it is the best game in the world.congratulations to both essendon and north for a great game pity there had to be a loser.
stat wise yes it was the greatest comeback in the game however to put it in a bit of prospective here there is no doubt a comeback of this nature against north 2yrs ago would have been a far more creditable win compared to a north side that ranout yesterday without martyn, stevens and carey.
also the recent history of the 2 sides with essendon clearly having the wood over nth with savage results and the make up of the 2 sides this year with essendon clearly wayout in front personnel wise the fact is they should have slaughtered north yesterday.dont get me wrong here it was a superb effort from north and this game typifies there will and strength and also essendons resolve of coming from a long way back.

as for the greatest comback ever well in the true context you cant go past carltons victory over collingwood in 1970 for the fact that it was a grand final.

like i said essendon and north should be congratulated for putting football on the feild back in its rightful place.
cheers!

huh? North were 69 points up. This wasn't no run of the mill team...they were premiers 2 years ago. You talk about the players missing from North, and you can harp on it all you want, but Carey nor Stevens could have improved on what happened in the first quarter. If anything...it could have been made worse if North were to always look for Carey.

Essendon was missing a few handy players themselves. Wellman, Blumfield, Rioli to name a few. The comeback was orchestrated with Misiti, Mercuri and M.Johnson on the bench. Not a bad bench that.

North were great in their endeavour. They battled...they didn't just 'give up'. The final scores show that.

Just because the Collingwood-Carlton match was a Grand Final doesn't mean it was the best "comeback" game ever. You see because it's a grand final (the 1970 game) there's no turning back for Carlton. They had to come back if they wanted a shot at winning the GF. There was no next week. Compare that with yesterdays game, North was 69 points up. Essendon could have just have given up or maybe gotten the margin down to a respectable score by the end of the game. Essendon was three games clear on top of the ladder and could afford to lose a game and still be on top. There was a next week. However, the Bombers came back to force a close contest and eventually win the game. That in my mind makes it a "better" comeback then the 1970 GF.

I agree Same Olds.

The fact that we didn't HAVE to win, yet we managed to win anyway, makes it a better comeback than, say, a 44 point comeback in a Grand Final. Yes, the GF is the most important match of the season but that is not what we are talking about.

I personally rate Hawthorns win over St. Kilda a few years back as a better comeback than Essendon’s yesterday.

Why?

Essendon are the top team and where playing against the team that was 9th on the ladder. Essendon are so good that they would probably back themselves to outscore the Kangaroos by over 69 points in 2 ½ quarters. Essendon’s win yesterday was not entirely unexpected.

Compare this to Hawthorn and St. Kilda.

The Saints were a top team back then. Hawthorn were a team in the bottom half. Completely the opposite to yesterday’s positions.

For a lower ranked team to come out and belt a top team like that, it is a more significant effort.

Sorry Bombers, but you may have to settle for second best. (For once!)

I stand to be corrected but North had no more that 9 premiership players but Essendon had 17. I think collectively Essendon had the more experienced team.

They've missed one I know of (unfortunately). Round 20, 1983; Roys led the Dogs 10.10 to 3.2 (margin: 50 pts) part way through the second quarter at the WO, only to be overrun in the second half by a Dogs side inspired by their sponsor's (Eastcoast?) promise of $$$$ if they were to win their last three games (which they duly accomplished).

Cost the Roys top spot and a certain premiership, that game did. :(

KOOL, I didnt know that was the Bulldogs best ever come back.
They were 49 points down against Sydney in 1999.
47 points down to Geelong in 2001.
46 points down to Kangaroos in 2000.
40 points down to Adelaide in 1999.
22 points down to Geelong with 7 mins left in 1999.
31 points down to St.kilda in 2001.

and we won all of them....
But the best wouldve been in 1998, but unfortunetly didnt.

It was Round 5 at the SCG, Sydney (2nd) V Bulldogs (1st)
at 3/4 time, Sydney were up by 57 points, and with 7:12 left in the game Sydney only led by 12 points.
But then the Bulldogs fell away and lost by 16 pts.

Thanx for that info Ripper...
Can you remember any more Bulldogs comebacks?

For one of the few times recently I was barracking for Essendon whilst watching the game live on Optus. I'll let you work out why!

(I could have gone but dont want to boost Essendon crowd figures ):D

Thank god the Brisbane v Hawks game is not in there !

No doubt the Dons were missing players. But they, Dons did have their best two (Lloyd, Hird) were out on the paddock. North would have good arguments (well no argument about Carey as their best) two missing. My view on it was they actually missed Stevo more than Carey as once Johnson got on top in the middle, North couldnt find anyone to match him. Im not saying Stevens would have stopped him cold, but i do reckon that he would have gotten his fair share of the ball and some much needed centre clearances for the Roos.

Well after watching the game & not just listening to it by biased commentators, when they mentioned about UFO's before the match, after watching it the martians definitely landed & were in total control of the game.

Just as well the Bombers have an anti martian defence built in.

Sandie watched it myself... it was no-where near as good on tv... martians??? are you talking about the umpires paying soft frees to Essendon in their forward fifty...

Did you see??? in the last five minutes of the game... the Rawlings free for throwing the ball over the boundary after it had been called out of bounds... rewind your tape 10 seconds and tell what the Essendon player did after his ball had been called out of bounds??? right beside our point post... don't tell me there arn't two different rule books...

walshy its a fact that essendon have the strongest list in the league those players missing would weaken incredibly any other side and the players who have replaced them would walk into any other side whereas north without the players i mentioned could not cover them.
cheers!

nothing can compare a comeback in a grand final to a home and away match no matter what.like i said in the post essendon.s recent history against north have been somewhat on the verge of a freo game.
cheers!
