We're obviously very unfit. The last-quarter fadeout is starting to become a problem: very insipid.

We'll obviously get creamed by Richmond next week: they have had the same time to prepare and are cherry-ripe, fit and all.
I don't think I'll watch us again, for my blood pressure, until we show some fitness.

On the positive side, Mackay was one of our best, I thought, clean and positive.

-Atkins – Jericho-like
-Thankfully we wont have to sit through another insipid performance from this team on the last day in Sept. Won't make the top 4.
-Betts - Finished
o_O
It's Round ONE, ffs, and we fielded a depleted side.
I'd prefer a win, of course, but we looked underdone (ran outta puff) with a few nervous debutantes mishandling the ball.
Too early to talk about Top 4 and Betts' being "finished".

Mentally and physically soft - we will not make the top 4 until Pyke starts drawing a line through the consistent failures.

Ahh well, that's a pain, wanted to win, not cos i wanted to win, that doesn't happen these days. I mostly only want to win to stick it up the commentators (and get them to calm down on their dribble) and the umpires. How sad is that.

Really should've won that.

Still strongly think our defensive setup is the prob. Kick into our forwardline, 3 or 4 on to one at times. Kick into theirs, nice and open, and for a bonus, they get crowd and team lifting exciting goals. But did we think to make it that hard for them, even when they got the run on. Nope. Still stick with the A game. No need to try and do this extra numbers back thing. Doesn't work. Except its what beats us pretty much every time.

-WTF does Pyke keep selecting McKay, Douglas, Jenkins.

100% on the 3 players mentioned up top .

Betts needs to start playing the averages as he gets older ... from early to mid last season he is trying to increase the level of difficulty .
Keep that for your pocket and your pocket only EB .

Problem is his underlings underwrite the teams performances , they do not like the tough decision .
Been that way since Neil Craig was on the downward .

Both were amazing when the game was on the line in the 2nd half of the 4th.

We set the bar so low.
Not sure the ball got within 50m of jj at the end there very often. Mackay was in our best 10. No one stood up in the last 10 mins. Unforgivable to lose from there

Thought our younger defenders outperformed their more senior counterparts.

Gibbs looked class in patches

Jenkins is still the most infuriating player on our list and possibly in the whole competition.

Sloane is the heart and soul of this team

We won’t be able to replace Smith’s absence this season

CEY is a good sized prospect and I hope he’s given more opportunities

Fogarty is an absolute animal. 1 game and I’m already calling him as our next captain. Has everything you want in a footballer.

Laird was exceptional

That was close to Eddie’s worst game for our club. Truly hope it’s just early season being underdone and he hasn’t started the descent off the cliff face with age.

Mackay was good for three quarters of the
Game and actually broke lines. Nearly undid all of his efforts with that last quarter effort. Wasn’t Robinson Crusoe though.

Talia struggled.

Gov did too.

Essendon are a decent side and we had a lot of C and D grade footballers/performances tonight.

Frustrating but it’s round one.

Good:
  • Fogarty joins the first kick first goal club.
  • Doedee, Gibbs was a Jet in Q3, the reason we were still in it.
  • Go into the game with 8 injured players and then we have about 8 more play like shit. All 4 talls. Eddie. Jeez.
Bad:
  • Umps gave essendon their first two goals, which turned out to be necessary cos Essendon couldn't kick for shit in Q2.
  • Which means the score line flattered us, should have probably lost by more.
  • Our gameplan seems to be to handball around until we get a free player at half back, then kick the ball long to a contest, watch Essendon run off with the ball, recover it at half back, repeat.
Ugly:
  • Our ability to find new an interseting ways to stuff up forward entries.
  • Had like 4 chances to kick goals mid Q4, and ice the game but stuffed them all.
  • How can Essendon have more players around the contest yet we don't have free players elsewhere.
  • Dougie suspended, Hampton injured, Greenwood and Fogarty can't run out a game and I have no idea how we are supposed to field a team next week if those 4 need to go out.

GOOD - Matt Crouch , Rory Laird , Rory Sloane , Bryce Gibbs

BAD - Our back line continues to be killed in isolation

UGLY - Atkins , Mackay , Hartigan , Douglas , Talia , Pannell , Chamberlain

Good
1. Its a marathon not a sprint yada yada...
2. The season really starts round 2
3. ...struggling....no, that's it

Take five or six best 22 players out of any side playing a top eight contender on their home deck and it is a tough ask.

Add to that three teenagers on debut running out of puff, a physically shot CEY and Hampton on the bench and it is obvious why Woosha told his players to play on at all costs. Essendon were manic in their forward movement at the end. Woosha spotted a weakness and went for it.

But we had a decent chance to win and ultimatley poor shot selection from Dougie and a missed mark and then swing in hope kick from Greenwood cost us the game. These two passages of play are what I am most disappointed in.

David Mackay was one of our best tonight .only problem is he is our on real run and carry player. That's where Richmond got us last year, Port last week and Essendon tonight
