Years ago, Rex Hunt introduced this idea of declaring a game over, and would have the fat lady sing. It was funny at first, and usually done around half way through the final term ... when the result was definitely beyond doubt.
As time went on, the fat lady would sing earlier and earlier, and these days they are declaring matches as "over" in the 1st quarter. Other commentators are now using the same idea, saying matches are over well before they are, and I find this extremely annoying.
One example was when Hawthorn were up 6 goals to nil against Richmond earlier in the season, and Richmond came back to win.
On the weekend I was listening to a match with the score 20 points to 2, and a commentator declared if they scored one more goal the match was over. Wow, 24 points down with 90 minutes to go and you have no hope?
I just wish commentators would stop trying to be clever because it really doesn't suit most of them, and just call the game. I want descriptions of the play, not their stupid opinions.
