Are they really crims? Are they a "crime gang"? Or just some hoon surfies who don't mind getting drunk and punching on? Obviously any group of mates will have some at the "scaly" end of things.

So The Bra Boys - genuine criminal gang?

I ask because really, I know stuff all about them. Have never dated a girl who's brother was one or done a story on one of them ... amazing as it may seem.

One of the brothers (and a few others) were busted with a decent quantity of narcotics a while back. Something about murder and bashings too. While not to go as far as calling them a "crime gang", they definitely were involved in some shady shite.

I think Russell Crowe made a doco about them a few years ago (someone else may care to find it)

He did it because IIRC they had something to do with South Sydney RL club

One of the Bra Boys made a doco about the Bra Boys, which Russell Crowe narrated (a few NRL players at the time were Bra Boys, including John Sutton from South Sydney). Not surprisingly, it was very sympathetic towards them.

Around that time there was bit of media attention to the gang, mostly sympathetic along the lines of "they were from disadvantaged backgrounds so they got involved in crime" type

The movie was made primarily about the Abbertons, who's claim to fame in the surfing world is having a brother, Koby, who was lucky to make the ASP top 16 for a couple of years.
Several of the brothers have been in trouble with the law repeatedly, one is doing time for the murder of an ex mate who I believe used to beat up on a girl the brothers knew. They also have links to one of the outlaw motorcycle gangs.
The Bra Boys are generally a pack of surf nazis, overprotective of their break. Different from just being classed as "locals", they seem to revel in notoriety and the fear others have of them. Essentially, the Abbertons are a bunch of losers that never progressed from being grommets.

Jai Abberton was acquitted of a murder charge, in the same incident where Koby was convicted of perverting the course of justice. Jai, however, has pretty much been in trouble with the law ever since. Koby and the youngest brother, Dakota (15 at the time the Bra Boys documentary was made) have both been convicted of assault since the documentary was released: Koby for the assault of an off duty policeman in the US; Dakota for attacking (and partially blinding) a woman who asked his girlfriend to get off her parked motor scooter.

As far as I remember, Sunny (the eldest brother, who made the documentary) and Koby are not on speaking terms anymore either.

The Abbertons grew up in this small area of houso estate in the south part of maroubra. Really rough. We're talking Mt Druitt by the sea. Their Mum was a junkie and growing up all they saw was drugs and domestic violence.

Essentially trailer trash who have never grown up. A lot of these guys are 40s and 50s and their still getting around in gangs and acting tough.

To the question of whether they’re actually an organised crime group, then no, I don’t think you’d class them as that.

I’ve read a bit, some have been in trouble with the law but mostly around assaults etc. There have been a few drug charges here and there but nothing consistent that would indicate an ongoing criminal organisation of any significance.

I remember around the Cronulla riots they made a bit of news. They were saying they had nothing to do with it and tried to organise some meetings with Lebanese community leaders to work with. Who knows how sincere it was. Maybe just attention seeking but it wasn’t like a notoriety attempt, they weren’t trying to claim responsibility for trouble or anything.

They came out and claimed Lebs were pussies and go to Cronulla instead of Maroubra because they are scared of teh Bra Boys.

Then the Lebs went to maroubra and smashed shit up and teh Bra Boys made a public statement along the lines of "yeah, you boys are alright, we was misrepresented"

The real reason Lebs go to Cronulla is it has a train station. Cronulla and Bondi are the only two beaches in Sydney with decent public transport. Even then the Bondi line stops about 2km's from Bondi Beach.
