My opinion would almost always be diametrically opposed to anything Patrick Smith says!

Nonetheless, the clubs do appear to be gunning for O'Connor's head.

I am not sure, however, that this is out of self preservation or not.

I also did not like that reference to Richmond at the end. Even accounting for the $450,000 loss of last year (allowance for the 190,000 extra in compensation for the Far Queue Stadium) we are still in a much stronger position than almost all other Victorian clubs.

Zero debt, millions in the bank and a large and passionate supporter base.

Patrick Smith is to Richmond as Caroline Wilson is to the Kangaroos - although not as subtle.

Two AFL commissioners have since admitted (Graeme Samuel and Terry O'Connor) that in the early 1990's the Commission wanted the reduction of the number of Melbourne clubs and at least one Melbourne club out of the competition so that Port Adelaide could come in and leave the competition at 16 teams.
