Just a nice little poll/opinion thread on Taylor Duryea.

Do you think Taylor Duryea is in our best 22?

In my opinion he is.
His kicking is Suckling standard. Hits the contest hard. Is defensively a better player than Guerra.
My only concern is he gets the yips at random stages, not even under pressure as his pressure work is one of the best at the Hawks.
Also seems to be one of the most liked at the club within. From the hawkstv videos I have watched he seems like a real down the earth bloke.
If you could share your thoughts on the young man go ahead.

I think he is.

He's definitely better defensively than Suckling. But I disagree that his kicking is of the same standard.

He's a handy mark for his size as well.

He is certainly groomed as Guerra's replacement. He is tidy one on one, he is confident on the rebound, and has an exceptional disposal by foot. I think we will still look for Burgoyne and Birchall for the kick out. Cheney is such a solid player, which is the difference between the poor and the good teams. We can bring him into a defence and he can be solid. He may not be as damaging offensively but he doesn't get dominated the other way either. He doesn't end up being a target for our opposition. Unfortunately I think Duryea's future is a far more promising. He doesn't get beaten often, he rolls off his opponents occasionally for support, he has decent pace, and a great kick. He is Goo's replacement and for me personally I am wrapped with his development as I had hi written off coming in to the year.

Seems to have the tools, but way off 'permanency' at present. Like the kid and, as suggested, there's real potential, but it just seems like he's on 'work experience' at present & normal transmission will be resumed when the likes of Birchall, Shiels, Sewell, Ellis (& some of the long term guys) are fit and it's the business end of the season. Must say he's fitted in nicely and certainly appears in the box seat to claim Guerra's spot down the track.

I like mostly what I have seen of him so far and agree he looks like a ready made replacement for Goo. I wouldn't say he is as good a kick as Suckers. Not a chance.

Better defensively than Suckling already, has a real presence in the air and puts his body in when its his turn, and seemed to have influence in general without the ball. Suckling improved in this area last year, but it looks like it comes much more naturally to Duryea. Doc's kicking has been solid, but no where near as damaging as Suckling's (from what he's produced so far), who was an absolute weapon in the way he could use the ball. He makes a few handling errors, but this is starting to be less apparent each week.

Looks a really good prospect overall, and its great he's finding so much game time. Perfect timing with Guerra coming to the end this year, or possibly next to have someone like Doc stepping up.

Hard to say about best 22. Firstly, we've hardly had enough available to really work out who will be this "best 22" for some weeks now. It might turn out the "22 that is fit come September", just like it was last year, rather than working out the best 22.

Hypothetically trying to work out who would miss from the group is pretty tough,

He's our best 26:

Hodge, Roughead, Lewis, Mitchell, Buddy, Bailey, Hale, Sewell, Shiels, Burgoyne, Whitecross, Lake, Gibson, Stratton, Birchall, Guerra, Breust, Rioli, Gunston, Smith, Hill, Puopolo, Simpkin, Duryea, Savage,Osborne

Finals you want a mixture of strength, experience, skills, attack at the ball, minimising our weaknesses and the best structure based on our opponent. It will be a huge ask for Duryea to get selected over some of those guys if somehow magically everyone is available at the same time, but he is giving himself a big chance if an opportunity does opens up.

We don't have a best 22 anymore.
Through hard work and good recruiting, we have a best 25 to 30.
When you struggle to find spots, or feel guilt for leaving a player out of the side, then your best goes beyond just the interchange and even the emergencies.
From Saturdays performance, which was a great win given Ports form at home this year, look at the players, any one of them ( if fit ), that could have come into that side that side, filled a role and we would have had the same result.
Franklin, Birchall, Shiels, Sewell, Anderson, Spangher, Osbourne, Ellis, Shoenmakers, Suckling, Grimley, Ceglar, Langford, Hallahan + Woodward. ( possibly Lowden and Litherland aswell )

I know Hallahan, Langford and Woodward ( Lowden & Litherland ) are untried, but I am confident any of those boys could play their role no problem.

We have a great mix of experience and youth.
By the time those younger boys on the list ( hallahan, Langford etc ) play 50 games, the likes of Smith, Poppy, Breust, Rioli, Shoey, Savage, Gunston, Stratton, Suckling, Whitecross, Shiels and even Duryea and possibly Hill, will be 100 game + players and have the experience to take the place of Mitch, hodge, Burgers etc...
Throw into that mix any draft pick ups, and things are looking pretty good down Glenferrie way.

Just my opinion anyway.

I know he's highly rated and apparently trained really well, but what in the 16 minutes of NAB cup over 2 years from Woodward gives you confidence he can play his role for a full match at the highest level when the heat is on. I don't want to put him down or anything but lets be honest, he is still yet to prove he can play VFL or even VFL 2nds.

I think it is pretty well accepted (even Clarko has spruiked it regularly) that most young players don't adapt fully to the demands of AFL until about 50 games. Using that as a standard he is making a great fist of his first opportunity imo.

This kid is going to be a Jet. He is exactly what we need in the back 6, and he will bring a hard edge when he puts on some kgs. love his attack on the ball. i reckon his port game was one of his best this year. Sometimes his kicking can let him down, but staple him to hodge and burger for a preseason and that will improve. glad he is a hawk.

He is getting better with each game he gets. I think he could be spending some time in the midfield as he gets more experience. Will he play finals when Birch returns, I don't know. However, I have him ahead of Goo at the present time. Taking kick-ins too.

Is the direct replacement for Goo and should play finals and depending how well he goes deserves a GF spot if we make it which in reality we should but who knows which Hawthorn will turn up in the finals.
Hill definitely is getting better and better and when Anderson come back in they will have a lot of fun out there along with the Doc..

I made a comment about him not being ready to play in the Sydney?? game or another game against a bigger bodied team due to size and being a younger player. I was quickly, and rightly, corrected about his size and attack on the ball. He is a big bodied kid (ish) and is fearless at attacking the ball.

He suits our defensive style PERFECTLY. Hard at it, rolls off his man to give support, has dash, has a great kick and makes great decisions for a 10 gamer. Hell, he makes great decisions for a 50 gamer. His decision making is ahead of where Breust, Smith, WhiteX or Poppies was at 10 games for sure. Maybe it was the little extra time plying his craft in the twos.

I already have him ahead of, thats right, AHEAD of Birchall and Suckling defensively and I think he gives us about 70 - 80% of what they do offensively.

I think he will be a 200 game player for the Hawks and is a ready made replacement for Goo. If Cheney keeps playing the way he did on Saturday he may even take Goos spot and let Doc loose in the midfield next year.

I'm not sure how good he may be, but isn't it great to have an exciting young player coming through the ranks, when they've spent a couple of years in our system?

Particularly when most of the Box Hill watchers here wrote him off completely ...

I like the cut of his jib but I voted no at this stage.

It will be interesting to see if Goo stays on after this season. Was epic last season and could still regain form but I think the coaches would feel pretty confident that Doc can and will step up to fill that roll moving forward.
