Since Rehn has announced his retirement, I wonder what people will think of him as a footballer?

He had some great seasons with the Crows, interspersed with his knee injuries, yet I feel that he will be remembered a lot for his efforts at Hawthorn. He never quite hit his straps and seemed really disinterested in a lot of games. He was also very disappointing a number of times when he was required to stand up. Was it his body or his mind that was his failing at Glenferrie Road?

He was a great ruckman in his Prime but was probably a tad overrated IMO, I still cant belive he made the best team of the past 25yrs a few years back.

Thanks Rehn, for playing well for us (crows) and helping us win back2back flags and also for not playing well against us for the Hawks and for also playing well against Port in the Semi Finals last year and knocking them out. I was so happy that Port lost that!

Look, I'm a Crows supporter, and although I'm still kind of annoyed at the manner in which he left the club, I've got nothing but great memories of Rehnny the footballer. Pre knee-injuries, it was inspiring to see a big ruckman busting a gut to smother a kick or try and effect a tackle (usually while some of his "star" midfield mates stood and watched). The knee injuries were sad, but if you want a defining image of Shaun Rehn the player, I personally think it was the '97 Preliminary Final where he threw off the giant knee-brace at half time and became a dominant player in an improbable Crows comeback.

I haven't followed his Hawthorn career all that closely, but the times I've seen him he looks frustrated that his body won't match what his mind wants to do anymore. I also think the 3rd knee reconstruction was the start of his decline, firstly as he did his "good" knee (which was also his taking off leg), and secondly, the manner he did it (slipping on that stupid rubber bouncing mat) seems to have left him feeling pretty bitter (and seeking compensation).

Re: Re: Shaun Rehn - Verdict?

Rehn the footballer: Inspirational, Courageous, Lifted his team on many occasions, Skillful, the best ruck in the league for a year or three, a fantastic career!

Rehn the person: arrogant, big-headed, pompous, full of himself arseh*le.

I get the feeling that if he hadn't done his knees he would be remembered as one of the all time great ruckmen.Even after two ops his grand finals in 97 and 98 were inspirational. I think that last knee just stole his growing confidence and set him back irretrievably. He did play some great games with Hawthorn no question but he was never quite the same again.

Thanks for the memories Shaun!

The rumour is as a playing coach!!!!

I'd heard that, but I'd be surprised - particularly if Ian Borchard manages to coach the Bloods to a rare victory in a finals game

Shaun Rehn was the best ruckman of the 90's. I rated him just ahead of our own great ruckman of the era Scott Wynd.

agreed - i am his biggest fan and i gonna miss him greatly :( he was so inspiring for us & he was the one who instigated our two flags!

I still believe that if it wans't for that third knee op he would of got a brownlow & would of able to continue to be a great ruckman - it robbed him of so much  in the end!

I hope that hawks can give the cats a thumping - just for the bigfella!

Seeya Rehny - thanks for the memories mate!

Easily one of the best ruckman I have seen, trouble was it was while he was with Adelaide. Shame about his knee problems and that (imo) stopped him from being mentioned alongside the great ruckman of the game.

On his time with Hawthorn? It was a mistake, I appreciate his efforts for the Club and when he played well for us we normally won. However we gave up way to high a pick to get him and 30 games return I hope makes us more wary of looking at an ageing ex-champion with injury concerns in any future deals. Grand career 'Puss', enjoy putting those long legs up in a well earned rest.

Not to worry Grendel. It looks like the bloke you gave up for him (Angwin) will be coming your way soon.

Thank you Shaun Rehn !! He could be a grumpy bastard, but he was a great player for the AFC. All the best!

I had a coaching clinic with Shaun Rehn when I was in year 6 and he signed my autograph for me and was really cool! (yes Port wasn't around in those days)

Unfortunately I must agree with you Macca.

I am an Adelaide supporter, but I must say that his conduct after he left SA was pretty disgraceful. He waited until he was out of Adelaide, then he sues his old club and his former league.

And I assure everyone...if he ever came back to SA, he would not be warmly welcomed back.

The Port Adelaide Football club moved from the SANFL to the ALF. When that happened a new football club, the Port Adelaide Magpies was formed, you dope! (Oh & we're not called Port Power any more, BTW, just in case you didn't know that yet.....being a Cow supporter & all...)

Shaun Rehn conducted himself brilliantly on and off the field at Hawthorn. He gave 100% every week, and even though his body wouldn't let him play like we know he can, he was still instrumental in some big wins for us.

The thing i will remember most about his time at Hawthorn was when he was dropped earlier this year. He copped it on the chin and played his heart out. He has certainly won my respect.

Well done Puss!
