In 1993, in the days before going viral was a thing, Kevin Sheedy managed to ‘go viral’, so to speak with his iconic jacket wave. The Eagles were in front by 4 points with 40 seconds and had just kicked behind. Essendon managed to swiftly transition the ball from the defensive 50 into the forward. Salmon who has been held goalless up until that point, was pushed in the back by Glen Jackovich, and given a free kick.
Salmon kicked the goal to get Essendon over the line by just two points, prompting coach Kevin Sheedy to emotionally wave his jacket over his head, starting the 'jacket waving' tradition.
This was also the beginning of a sort of mini-rivalry with West Coast full of interesting moments such as Hird hugging the fan, and Scott Lucas
’ 7 Goals in the final quarter of Hird and Sheedy’s last game… a game we almost stole.
The Round that was
How good was that? Finally, we beat the damn Tigers. It was a great testament to the improved mental fortitude of this team, especially with Shiel joining Parish, Wright and Kelly on the injury list. I’ve no doubt many of foresaw another ‘honourable loss’ coming when we were down by 3 goals in the last.
Ridley was amazing on his return; a reminder that had he not copped that cheap shot we would have beaten Port. McGrath is proving he belongs down-back; Weids is proving to have been an excellent recruit this year, and Durham made the moment his! Captain Merret was rightfully awarded best afield is probably his best game of the season so far.

Last time we Met
Last year was a grim year for Essendon, and one of the worst losses for the year was the round 15 loss to the West Coast Eagles. West Coast Eagles won 2 games for the year, and one of them was against us… Essendon losing to bottom 2 sides is not uncommon, but it still hurt at the time.
