Review Positives and Negatives: Fremantle vs Adelaide

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Major Positives: d
- Return to form for Spurr (finally) with 32 possessions and a massive influence on the game.
- The loss of Johnson did nothing to deter our defence. Duffield, Ibbotson, McPharlin and Dawson also had colossal games.
- Massive game-changing goal from (who-woulda-thunk-it) Dawson.

Major Negatives:
- Johnson injury
- Accuracy and determination in the first half.

Other positives:
- 7 shots on goal for Pav (even though 3 goals) with one of the best defenders in the game on him.
- Mayne beginning to build with two shots on goal and influential in many others.
- Sandi's BOG and comedic run for goal.

Ultimately, our second-tier players are finally starting to lift. Suban, Sheridan and Sutcliffe all played great game and Mayne is starting to improve. I still feel we need to fix a lot in our midfield and we are looking a little bare in the forward department. I think the potential adding of either Sylvia, Bradley or Morabito could add a bit of flavour.

Comfortable win all in all and I hope that we can win our first game off a 6-break and at the MCG in quite some time.

Gotta say, today was a pretty even performance across the side from where I was sitting. Did anyone really have a bad game?

Even Sheridan got 11 touches and a goal after getting subbed on.

MJ injury the downside, and the horrible kicking for goal also.

MJ's injury a negative but hopefully it is just a few weeks. Gives us some wriggle room with selections, and we do have some games coming up where we can spare him for recovery.

The goal kicking is a major issue for us at the moment. It was a major factor in losing the biggie last year.

The positives were many (really liked the younger players games), but I will just highlight that I think our pressure was significantly improved, and we looked dangerous.

I need to watch the recording as you can see things you don't see at the game but.......

Sandi was at his best today. Must have had a large bet with somebody that he can take a bag of marks. Hope its a big collect. The synergy between Sandi and the mids was the best I an remember seeing for a while and that was really pleasing. This week he can work on his goal kicking :p

First half was eminently forgettable. Perhaps the worst we've played all year. Fumbly, ordinary decision making and some poor skills on display. We looked like a shadow of the team that took on Geelong.

Thats the negative stuff done. After half time they looked like they had a purpose. Handling was better, we looked more direct and decision making was better. We looked a lot better organised after half time and it showed in how we took the game away from Adelaide and shut the door the on them pretty firmly.

Apart from Sandi, wasn't Hill pretty spiffy out there...again. I'm loving watching him take the game on and he looks a million bucks when he does. Fyfe gets another tick, ditto Duffield, Spurr, Mzungu and Clarke. Ballas was down on what I expected but the number of times he was dumped off the ball might have had something to do with that.

Overall: goal kicking needs work (der), Margetts and Stevic need to be investigated and decision making could use some tweaking. The team appears to be gelling a lot more as the season has been going along and looked good after half time If we maintain that along with working hard, we will be well setup for September.

What was the problem with Johnno? Was at the game and couldn't really tell

@dardysingh,

it looks like Johnson has a mild medial strain and according to the after games press conference will be out for 2 - 4 weeks. He injured it making a tackle where we swung around and landed pretty heavily. Hopefully on 2 weeks but we might miss him against Richmond. I don't think SCOS is a like to like to replacement but I think we can re-jig the defence for those few weeks.

Dawson goal of the year for mine, and a team lifter!

Dawson saw Fletch last week and thought (I want some of that). And yes, Dawson could pay into the twilight of 30's. I want it.

I was literally like off my couch going YEAAAAAHHHH when he dobbed it.:D:D:D Smiling and laughing with joy. Proud of my buddy
today

Positive: Even performance amongst the players and a strong result overall
Negative: Inconsistent effort. Inaccuracy. Mickey Johnsons injury.

Positive (and this applies for the whole year and hopefully, the rest of the year): Opposition teams seem to have forgotten/are ignoring the fact that Stephen Hill is, and has been for some time, one of the most damaging players in the AFL. Seriously, if he is going to get 25-30 touches every week, we'll win far more than we lose. Tag Fyfe all you want, we'll just chuck him forward and he'll still hurt you. The thinking of opposition coaches on this one baffles me.

Positives:
  • A win against the crows ... always a tough team to beat
  • Good even performance by all players
  • We gotta have one of the better ruck divisions in the comp
  • Dawson's goal
  • Corporate box ... first time and i want more ... time to suck up more to the boss
Negatives:
  • Inaccurate set shots
  • MJ's medial injury

I like the way we switched gears at half time after what was a very lacklustre first half.
There was a sense of control from about 5 minutes into the 3rd that we never really lost.
Its still a novelty for me to be able to watch a whole last quarter and not be even the slightest bit worried that we are going to lose.
Hill continues to shine, Fyfe was wonderful in the 3rd. Spurr back to his best and Ibbo looks terrific.
Even, professional performance.
Just watched a bit of the replay and great to Hear Heally talking about what a great side we are to watch and waxing lyrical about Hill's kicking and Fyfe's everything.

Negative. the people that normally sit behind me are on holiday and must have given their tickets to the people that go to the football once a year and sit there all game yelling just bloody kick it. The patriarch must have said 6 times a quarter that the whole problem is that we need to keep our forward in the forward half and Pav should never leave the forward 50. Everytime Pav bobbed up on wing he would yell get back to goal square! He delivered a great lecture about how in his day that was how the game was played and someone needs to tell the coach that thats how you win a game of footy.
His wife kept saying I thought Pav was supposed to be a good player, he's terrible and comments of a similar insightful nature.

Ugly -
MJ injury
Bogan Adelaide haircuts
Umpiring still baffling in lack of consistency

Bad -
First half, how the heck can two teams score less than 65 points combined in a half of footy in great footy conditions? Just woeful stuff...
Our goal kicking - also had 4 OOF to go with 18 behinds. Has been our club's biggest weakness for many months now, cost us the grand final and really needs to be fixed soon. From set shots especially, we are just woefully inaccurate at some of the easiest shots, and on the really pressure shots at key points...

Good -
Agree with everyone else's positives, and would add:
34 shots at goal if you include the 4 OOF;
20 marks inside our forward 50, 15 or 18 of them contested, depending on which stats you get - been a heck of a long time since we owned the forward 50 marking like that.
Kept them to less than 2 goals per quarter on average
The bogan yob Adelaide fans (including one wearing studded jeans rolled half way up his shins, but with no socks, in Canberra, in winter) at my local all shut up in the second half and streamed out the door halfway through the last quarter, showing the dedication most Adelaide fans over here do. Like the Wegirls mob, they drop off damn quick when winning isn't locked in.

Good win, but geez Adelaide are an insipid side. Reflect Sanderson's personality and morality in everything they do...

I liked that quite a few of the guys who have been "under performing" seemed to step up today.

Spurr, Sherro and particularly Mayne.

Mayne had 2 shots on goals and was involved in at least 3 more. Not to mention he's getting back to his usual manic pressure - good work buddy!!

+
Sandi - Simply outstanding, best ruck in the league by a country mile at the minute
Hill - Continues to get more and more of the ball
Fyfe - Worked through his tag very well
Crowley - Held Dangerfield after an average first quarter
Mundy - Gosh I hope he signs on
Spurr - Absolutely destroyed Betts
McPharlin - Absolutely destroyed Tex
Dawson - Kicked a goal

-
Johnson - Injury
Poor goal kicking
Umpiring - So inconsistent

particularly Mayne.
Mayne had 2 shots on goals and was involved in at least 3 more. Not to mention he's getting back to his usual manic pressure - good work buddy!!
I meant to mention this too. It seemed to finally start bouncing his way a bit today after a horror stretch. A sharp and firing Mayne goes a long way toward 4 points for Freo.
