There's been heat between the clubs for years going back to Hartlett v Rioli and Wingard v Hodge incidents from the early 2010s, and who can forget the 2014 preliminary final which was an all time classic.
Then there was the Russell Ebert tribute match in 2022 where Mitchell schooled Hinkley in the coaches box, and the 2024 semi final along with Gather Round 2025 has seen a new potential rivalry emerge.

Do you agree there is a rivalry brewing between Port and Hawthorn?

Absolutely, any game that draws a heap of neturals in to make sure they watch is a good thing.

Good to see the good prevail on Sunday night. Sure as eggs there would of been no humility from Hawks had they have got up

Yep. A great one. They seem to hate each other more than two non-rivals should. Good.

There is a rivalry.

But need to be careful it isn’t allowed to b anymore toxic than it seems

It’s like the WA vitriol before and during freo v hawks prelim a few years back it was over egged

But the AFL seem happy to profit from it.

Honestly can’t remember majority of the incidents you’ve mentioned being much more than news of the day.

I reckon it’s a stretch.

Eh. As much as the afl media thinks I’m supposed to, I just can’t muster any real sort’ve hatred for Hawthorn. Sure they’ve got a couple of lippy small forwards, but if I’m gonna properly hate clubs it’s going to be rancid ones like Collingwood and Adelaide.

I dunno, anyone good at lip reading?

I think he says something like "best wishes to those friendly fellows"

Well Hawthorn has us playing them in Tassie this season, so wasted chance there. If the AFL was so keen to cash in on it, then they should have scheduled the return bout in Melbourne.

The commentators on channel 7 were saying it has potential to be on the scale of rivalries such as these:
Carlton v Collingwood
Essendon v Collingwood
Carlton v Richmond

It reminds me of GWS v Bulldogs which would have been a better comparison for them to use.
Another one is Essendon v West Coast with Sheedy waving his jacket which is akin to Hinkley doing the aeroplane.

It’s been 2 games.

I wouldn’t think so. Essendon and Geelong really for Hawthorn and nothing really after that. There was with Sydney for a little while there but 1 all in 2 grand finals and it’s pretty much dead now

I think Adelaide Oval will be spicy for a few more years, while the key on field players are still around. Remains to be seen if the Tassie/Melbourne games have the same intensity, I have my doubts, because a lot of it is crowd driven.
