The Brits have it right when it comes to sit-coms. Often a small number of episodes, but it's still just enough that it doesn't grow stale and leaves every episode memorable. Fawlty Towers only had 12 episodes, The Mighty Boosh 20, The Office 14, The Inbetweeners 18, The IT Crowd 25... you get my point.


The issue with a lot of American comedies, even great ones, is that they tend to for 1-2 seasons too many (20 seasons if you're talking about The Simpsons). For example, I enjoyed Scrubs but that was a couple of seasons too long, 30 Rock and Community grew stale after a while and even Seinfeld could've ended sooner (Larry David leaving was the impact). Curb and Always Sunny the exceptions to that rule.


I never watched Friends so I can't make a judgement.
