This may seem an odd question. However my son who just turned 6 has just been told that he has to wear glasses. He loves his footy, in fact he loves it so much he still baracks for four teams. Could anyone out there tell me the names of any players who wear glasses. He is having a hard time and I think if I could let him no if some of his heros wear glasses he woudl be able to deal with it a bit better.

Thanks

Players at the top level all wear contacts if they need to wear glasses, but there are many of them. Going back a few years two of the best have been Rob Flower and Wosha.

Geoff Blethyn is the 60's/70's used to wear them on the ground.

Brett Ratten too was a blind as a bat - didn't even wear contacts on the ground.

Tony Southcombe from Carlton was another to wear glasses while playing.
But as per others, contacts would seem to be the way to go. Agree with Huey (Mocaholic)- some players who would normally wear glasses off the ground, probably don't worry with contacts on the ground anyway - I wear glasses and never wore them (or contacts) when I played. At 6, I wouldn't think his eyesight would be poor enough to prevent him from playing without either, would it??

players who wear contacts then

Thanks for your imput - I guess I will re phrase my question. I want to tell my kid that some of his heros have to wear glasses and contacts (in the ground). Of course I can't tell who does or doesn't wear contacts. So I want to be able to tell him that certain players need glasses (and wear contacts when they play - which he will have to do when he gets old enough) so does anyone know apart from Ackermanis who may wear contacts

I can't think of any others that haven't already been mentioned! jayengo, I feel very sympathetic towards your son, I'm 26 and just found recently had to start wearing glasses and I wasn't really happy about it either! :p

I would suggest trying to find pictures of players wearing their glasses at off-field functions and things like that, might help him too.

My son plays for Golden Grove under 6's and wears his glasses whilst playing ("But then I can't see, Dad" was his answer to my suggestion of not wearing them, for the sake of safety).

After 4 games, he is yet to get a whack on the head, and it no longer bothers him, or myself. He has however worn glasses since he was 9 months old (bloody genetics, sorry son!).

Sounds to me like you are on the right track though, fill him with confidence and he will soon forget about it.

Stephen Kernahan is another who wore contacts, to directly answer your question.

Cheers

There've been a fair few mentioned above.

He said Heros. People have either listed all players that the kid won't know, or duds like Presti.

As a wearer of contact lenses, I thought I might add my two cents worth.

When I was unable to read the black board from the back row at school, my teachers figured there was something wrong - bloody embarrasing for me, but funny as hell for my mates. I was promptly sent to the optometrist and went home with an awful pair of glasses. These glasses went to school with me, as my parents demanded, but didn't come out of my bag.

Eventually, my parents found out and decided that contacts were the way to go.
It tooks me a few weeks to get used to sticking something in my eye, but once that period was over, I never looked back. Played footy, still play tennis and haven't had a concern since.

They are a great invention and I am sure your son will be amazed at what he can see with them on. Couldn't believe what I was missing all that time.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Funny - I went through school thinking that the reason that kids sat down the back was because not being able to see the board gave them free licence to ****fart around. I of course was one of these kids (oooooooh - what a rebel!!).
I honestly didn't think there was a problem until I was at the G one day - quite a few years later mind - and not only could I not identify the player over the other side of the ground who had the ball, I couldn't identify the team.
And it was a Tiges v Swans game - not even North v Coll.

The specs were indeed a revelation.

Kevin Bartlett wore contacts and played 400. As mentioned by some-one else, Geoff Blethyn wore Clark Kent style glasses and kicked over 100 goals in a season. Your kid wont know a lot of the players mentioned on this thread, but you can point out their achievements.

what was Blethyn's interview with Leach like on SEN today? I heard he was coming up but didn't have the time to stick around and here him come on...anything interesting?
