Players use ice, says AFL captain

SWANS captain Leo Barry believes it is naive to think some AFL players are not using the deadly illegal drug ice.

There is growing concern in AFL circles that ice -methamphetamine - has overtaken cocaine as the drug of choice for professional footballers because it's hard to detect and, unlike alcohol, it doesn't impact on players' weight.

Illegal drug use was firmly put back on the agenda after the West Coast Eagles were forced to admit last Thursday, after weeks of speculation and rumour, that a small group of their players had problems with drugs and alcohol.

On Tuesday the Eagles dropped another bombshell, announcing they had suspended indefinitely superstar Ben Cousins after he missed two training sessions.

There is no suggestion Cousins is linked to ice but the fallen footballer is understood to be considering treatment at a drug and alcohol clinic in Arizona.

"You'd be naive to think that some players wouldn't be using ice," Barry said.

"Ice is more of an epidemic right now in society than heroin and a lot of people have come unstuck under its influence.

"Hopefully everything that happened recently highlights the fact it is a responsibility of the clubs to keep educating the players and keep on reinforcing the dangers of illicit drugs.

"It not only affects the player personally but also the club and the fans, so there's a huge amount of people it can impact on."

While Cousins remained bunkered down yesterday, his ex-girlfriend Sam Druce was seen leaving the luxury South Perth unit they once shared.

It is understood AFL boss Andrew Demetriou offered to help Cousins locate the best drugs rehabilitation institutes in Australia and the world and even offered financial assistance.

Both Cousins and his father Bryan, a former footballer and the most influential person in the young man's life, are being urged to either front the media or release a statement.

Bryan is thought to be opposed to his son making a public appearance.

Cousins is likely to apologise for the harm caused, admit he has some personal issues which require professional help and that his welfare was the priority ahead of football.

Eagles coach John Worsfeld admitted on Wednesday that the Cousins "issue" first came to light in July last year, prompting him to express his concerns in a letter to Cousins's manager.

However, West Coast skipper Chris Judd yesterday said he was shocked by this week stunning developments.

"It's definitely a surprise that Ben's been suspended from the footy club ... and he's not with us for the foreseeable future," Judd said.

I would have thought with the money those guys are on that charlie would be the drug of choice....along with the disco biscuits but it seems nothing is off the menu.

Personally i don't think that many players would be using ice regularly. It keeps you up for a hell of a long time plus ICE.....if they mean ICE in its true sense, makes you very sketchy.

also, if you take pure ice , once, just once, u r effed for life, no turning back

I myself have never done it, but I know plenty of people who occasionaly take it and they are just fine.

Not to say it isn't dangerous and can scew a lot of people up, but that statement is bollocks. Don't believe everything you hear/read.

Another reason to read the actual article and disregard the headline.

Leaping Leo said it was naive to think players didn't use ice.

He didn't say, or imply, or hint, or anything like say "PLAYERS USE ICE".

They use Ice because despite the fact that it gets them revved up, they stay relatively coherent in comparison to ecstacy or even cocaine.

And all this crap in the media about how smoking ice once will keep you up for 24 hours is totally ridiculous. I know people that do it, and they might smoke half a gram throughout a night and still go to sleep the next day.

Personally don't see how anything can be good enough to warrant the $300-400 bucks a gram that you'll pay though...

Leo Barry denies drug claims

Sydney Swans co-captain Leo Barry has today emphatically denied reports in this morning’s media that he had claimed methamphetamine, or ice, had become a major drug problem within AFL playing ranks.

“That is outrageous and totally untrue,” Barry said.

“I was asked a specific question about ‘ice’ in an interview and replied to the effect that I believed you would be naïve not to think that some players haven’t at least experimented with the drug.

“In saying that, I was not talking from any anecdotal evidence, but more about the epidemic in society that we have read about in the media in recent times.

“When you consider there are 700 odd players in the AFL the numbers would suggest that somewhere along the line someone would have taken ‘ice’.

“For someone to intimate that I claimed the use of the drug was rife in AFL is absolutely ludicrous.”

All of you guys, including Barry have been watching too much 60 minutes.

Abolsutely. Look at what has been published to date

1. The Australian came out and stated yesterday "Cousins drug of choice is cocaine".

2. If you take the reports of the crown casino incident as true, he was clearly suffering paranoia during the Crown Casino episode, but was "alseep" not all that long after the episode.

Now anyone who has been in contact with drugs in general and ice in particular knows

1. Most drug users have a drug of choice, but will flit with other ones occaisionally. A lot of them will use other "legal" drugs to ease the come down and get some sleep.

2. Paranoia is a known side effect with chronic coke abuse, as well as with ice/speed/etc. However, sleeping on ice? unless you've got serious quantities of tranquilisers - forget it. Aint gonna happen for a day. Ice users pull all weekend benders - no sleep. It's not unusual for them to go 2-3-4 days without sleep. The reported facts to date are far easier to line up with coke abuse then ice abuse.

Ice is the heroin of the noughties - the stigma and media excitement is the same - albeit more "acceptable" amongst users due to it being able to be ingested / smoked / insulfated as well as shot up and being able to be local produced with the associated supply connotations. I'm not saying Benny hasn't done ice - although I wouldn't be suprised if it becoming more frequent in his life, I'm not saying other players haven't done ice. But the commonly accepted reports to date add up to cocaine abuse, not ice.

Accurate except for one thing:

There's a swap over. Many people who take coke as their drug of choice swap to ice.

Why?

1. Although ice is slightly more expensive per gram it is actually cheaper/more economical.
2. Ice is far more addictive. Love coke, start doing ice regularly, the ice will almost always take over.

You are just as cohrent on ice (and speed) as you are on coke. Look at the entertainment industry - actors, musicians. Look at models. Turn on your TV. Go look at Naomi Campbell. Coke is a functional drug - up until a point. It would be telling if Cousins were to come out and admit the length of period he has been using - and when it turned from a post match fun into something more.

If you are smoking or injecting meth in decent quantities - say half a point - forget about sleep without any other assistance for 12-18 hours. On coke - far sooner.

As to why you'd spend $300 a gram on coke instead of the far more economical (bang/buck) speed/ice - At a simplistic level - image and come down. Coke's come down is far easier. Coke is "glamourous". Ice? You may as well be a leper. Of course, this excludes brain chemistry - which means different people have a prediliction for different drugs.

I;d be surprised if he was on ice, though the whole problem of not turning up to traing is a fair point that cus didnt get much sleep the night before!
YOU CAN NOT GO TO SLEEP AFTER SMOKING 1/2 G OF ICE!!!! NO WAY!!!!
You would have to think his on the coke, you can have a big night out on, wake up the next day and be as good as gold.
Although last night on the footyshow, whenever Woosha used an illicit drug as an example, he always said ecxtacy! So that word seemed pretty fresh on his mind!

See.

Gotta love the media, don't you?

There have been players doing it for years. Whats the point?

The point is that Joe Public thinks the world is very clean and doesn't have a drug issue. And if there is a drug issue - it effects dirty skanky people who live on matresses and haunt suburbs a long way from where they live.

Suddenly Joe Public might realise that drug use is pretty common in all walks of life and that drug abuse can happen to anyone - no matter how rich, poor, how they work, who their friends are, how mentally tough they are and what there family is like.

For me - I hope the message gets out there.

the thing with ecstacy is that it is not addictive. sure people develop a tolerance to it, they more often you have it, the more you need to get the desired affect but you dont develop an addiction to it.

ice on the otherhand, extremely addictive - this **** ruins lives if you become addicted, completely ****s up your mental health
