The AFL is a little different.
Pretty sure no club has actually done that yet?
There's no calls to mum " I'm sub tomorrow."
We make a big deal out of debuts and if a kid isn't up to being on the ground in the 1st quarter save it up until he is.
I think it has been done already, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, I don’t hate it. It’s not like last year where you were no guarantee to get on. If the best thing for the team is to have him as the sub then that’s where he starts.

I don't see the issue. It actually might help take the pressure off them. It was much worse when it was an injury sub and you risked not even getting on.
I dont think it's that big a deal.

If you end up playing it's almost like getting 2 x debuts. Celebrate coming on as the sub, then celebrate your first game in the 22.

And thinking back 20-25 years, debutants regularly got about 3 minutes game time in the era of 10-15 interchanges a game

This is the weird about the "debuting as a sub is bad" thing.

Starting on the bench used to mean sitting and watching almost the whole game anyway. And kids used to be named on the bench a lot.

If Boak doesn't come up for the Hawthorn game, Wolverine could debut. I would pick him ahead of Mead now.

It’s time. Debut him.

Tell you what, we have raved about Dylan’s transformation, well this guy was Farlap out the back but has fought back and been very solid of late.
It's not time. We're trying to win a flag here. Not the time to be debuting short skinny kids.

I’m all for developing young players, players only improve so much in the sanfl environment but afl is a whole other thing and it’s important to players development and can really help.. but there’s no rush on the clock here for hugh.

1. He’s still super skinny and lightweight. He’s an absolute baby still. Still very young, we’re not talking about a player who’s been ready for ages and overlooked, he emerged 10mins ago. Paints still wet.

2. We’ve got a stacked midfield right now, and if we play him at afl level he’s likely going out to a flank and not playing the spot he should be playing in to develop. Look at mead for example. Can’t get into the middle in the afl, and he’s far more physically advanced than hugh. Hugh’s not getting a game in there.

I’m rapt with his performances this season. He’s exactly what we need developing and this is the season we would have dreamed of him having. Great clearance numbers but also the way he gets them with a bit of dash suits us well and can be very effective at afl level.

I just think we give him another preseason to put some more size on and kms in those legs. It would be great to have him pushing for games next year.

If we had a clear easy game left in our run home I'd be tempted to give JHF a rest for a week (he's showing the effects of a limited pre-season) for him, but we don't. If we give JHF a rest (Hinkley is more 'use until broken', so unlikely), with a tough run home I'd expect it'd be more juggling others already in the 22 into the midfield and bringing in someone more physically suited. With Boak clearly on the downwards trend this year (still worthy of a spot in the 22) and inevitable injuries he should get a game next year.

Hugh is a game changer at sanfl level. He may be lightly built but he has great core strength and balance. Has a great knack of shrugging tackles from much older stronger looking players. His burst speed from a stoppage is a point of difference and he always looks to release an team mate with the ball. He has a Francou like ability to get the ball out of the tightest spots.

There is some unique talent there that was well spotted by Port. He plays with great confidence and wouldn't be out of place if given a chance.

Rather than give JHF a rest we could just play him as a full time forward pocket in Juniors spot.

I feel like Hugh, a but like Mead, would still be a level below at AFL level.

Not saying he won't make it. I think he ha smore AFL traits than Mead. But I do think he is still one solid pre season of bulk away from being truly ready.

I'd be OK with giving him a game for experience but I wouldn't be expecting much at this stage.

I think he would offer as much if not more than Sinn or Burgoyne have shown at AFL level this year. He has skills that would translate well to AFL.

At this stage of his career any games would just be to give him a taste of what is required.

Would have had a run already but for that 3 week break due to concussion.

Confident he gets a game before too long.

We have form for giving good kids early games. Wolverine is a good kid.

We can chuck Ollie into the ruck and give him a game this week [emoji4]

Yes please.

I was a big fan of his in his draft year and I thought I saw a bit of Simon Black in the way he disposes of the ball by foot. It was a while ago.

Francou meets Black. Why not?

I think it would be nice to have a bit of pressure on the back end of the midfield.
