I can't help but think that with the 42nd pick in the 2006 National draft K. Sheedy made one of his last but most inspired choices in his ambition to make the Essendon Football club the premier sporting club in Australia. In 1981 when Sheed's took over the helm the club was practically a basket case, just enduring one of the bleakest periods in their very long and decorated history. Since then He has devoted his life not only to the on field performance of the club but to the idea of making it into the off field success he knew it could be.

In drafting Bachar Houli from the western suburbs of Melbourne it could tap the EFC into a very large and expanding demographic, most of which are new to Australia and have no football allegiances what so ever. The Muslim community in Australia currently numbers around 300,000 I would think maybe around 100,000 of which would be in Melbourne. That represents a huge number of families most of which are relatively new to this country.

As Houli's profile rises in the AFL so it will within the Muslim community particularly in Melbourne. As most of you Bomber fans have seen this kid’s potential on the field is massive and could translate into a huge amount of new Essendon supporters. And the beauty is that they are not in Launceston, Gold Coast or Shanghai for that matter, they are right here in Melbourne. I'm not expecting huge amounts of Muslim families to start flocking to the dome but over time the younger kids looking for role models and someone to identify with may turn to the young Lebanese-Australian from the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Was this going through the minds of Sheed's and the Essendon recruiting staff when Houli slipped though to pick 42? Why did he slip to 42? When he made his debut in mid-2007 he looked ready made and to have little down side. So was it the fact that he was a Muslim and was required to fast during September which turned other clubs off? We may never know, but even if my predictions don't come true we've still got a bloody good player for pick 42.

Houli's religious background may have been one of the factors in wanting him. According to Noel Judkins, as printed in Tim Watson's "The Jigsaw Man", Sheedy drafted Daniel McAllister with pick 5 of the 1996 draft because he falsely believed he would become the first coach in the AFL to coach a maori player. Whatever the reasoning though, Houli's character seems, from the outside, to have been a really good addition to the club. We hear already how David Myers is considered future leadership material, i would like to know if people are saying the same of Bachar?

I can see him joining the leadership group in the future, his dedication is second to none. Of all the players that came back from the off-season, Bachar looked the most improved in fitness and body size. With another 2-4 pre-seasons he will be a very solid contributor and club leader.

Agree with OP but Sheedy went a bit overboard on this kind of thing at times. McAllister was just a massive disappointment, Dwayne Armstrong was another from down this path.

Dont forget the kid from Nigeria or where ever it was. I still remember the headline "Swaps Machine Gun for Football" or something like that.

Whatever happened to that bloke?

Sheeds and the Martians!!

I think they had him playing up in one of the NT leagues. Going by the lack of news regarding him, he must not have picked up the game well enough.

Actually to be honest. I reckon he might have slipped to 42 purely because of his religion.

Houli was rated a late 1st round to early 2nd round from memory

but suffered from a lot of injuries and I am pretty sure that I read

somewhere that was the reason for his slip in the draft

Not debating it but I don't recall that. I do enjoy hearing "bargains" though! :thumbsu:

I'm a big fan of Houli, won't be a Chris Judd but will be reliable/dependable! ;)

I agree. I can recall back in 2004 when Bachar was representing U16 Vic metro playing against Selwood who was representing Vic Country up in Oakliegh. I was left in awe when I watched them both play against each other, especially Bachar who was playing with an injury (think it was his hip at the time). He then travelled to QLD and got picked up 3rd overall for All-Australian. How he slipped to #42 just baffles me. He should of gone top 15 no doubt, if anyone has the tapes of the U18 carnival would find it amazing that he wasn’t picked in the All-Australian squad. He was also playing 5 weeks before he torn his Achilles in a bike accident

Kevin Sheedy and your recruiting manager were brave enough to take him and it would pay dividends to the EFC for another 10 years to come, no doubt.

IIRC Houli was hit pretty hard with injury during '06 - a back injury which was rumoured to be pretty serious. I'd imagine this would've scared a lot of clubs off.

Not to mention that the '06 draft was quite strong and naturally players tend to slide

I saw a play called From lebanon with love not long ago, they showed pictures of some famous lebanese people, where they clapped every person, when they showed Houli the whole place erupted.
So i think its a very good pick up for the club.:thumbsu:
