From Ninemsn
The AFL season of Adelaide defender Phil Davis appears over, with scans expected to confirm he needs a shoulder reconstruction.
Davis dislocated his right shoulder in Adelaide's 19 point victory over St Kilda on Saturday night.
The 20-year-old was returning from a two-week absence due to a sprain in the same shoulder, which was reconstructed in 2008 before he was signed by the Crows.
"It has been dislocated, so it's not good news," Adelaide coach Neil Craig said.
"What that means long term, whether it is rehab or surgery, we won't know until early in the week.
"It's disappointing for Phil because he's a key player for us and he's developing into an important player.
"I love his attitude to footy and it's just disappointing for our supporters when that sort of injury occurs."
Craig has already this season lost forward Jason Porplyzia to a shoulder reconstruction, while winger David Mackay is sidelined for three months with a shoulder injury.
Half-forward Ricky Henderson suffered a corked thigh in a win over the Saints which Craig said was educational for his players.
"It is just another lesson for us," he said.
"We had nine players with less than 20 games, so for that team to play against a side that has played in the last three grand finals ... it was a great experience for those nine players in particular.
"Now what we have got to do is make sure we keep pushing them very hard."
Spearhead Kurt Tippett kicked four goals against the Saints, all from set shots which historically troubled the former basketballer.
"What you now know is Kurt is capable of doing it so you can keep the heat on him," Craig said.
"He has been working hard on that ... and he's starting to get rewards, and they were really important, we talk about finishing all the time."

Extremely disappointing for Davis, and I guess now the hard questions will need to be asked about whether he was really ready to come back. It was such an innocuous incident, a tackle of the type that is laid a hundred times a week, that it seems unrealistic to simply put it down to a "freak accident".

For Davis though, that doesn't matter now. What matters is that his recovery goes smoothly. Come back soon Philthy, we miss you already!

Can we invest in some Jax-like technology for Davis and Porplyzia?

At the game I didn't actually see what caused it (I saw the tackle, but had no idea something so innocent was the cause) and my first comment to a friend was that I hope we didn't rush him back too early.

But now having seen the incident, I think it's just a case of bad-luck. If his shoulder was that loose that such a nothing tackle could pull it out, I don't really think there is anything that could've prevented it.

I thought that I read somewhere this morning that the Crows Dr has said that the injury was a clean dislocation which means a full recon will not be required and as a result Davis would miss 8-10 weeks

Wouldn't it be better for his long term welfare to go and do a full reconstruction anyway?

you can't do a full reconstruction on something that doesn't need to be reconstructed.

Just like you can't reconstruct both the PCL and ACL in the knee if only one is torn.... unless you want to tear the other one and then do a full reconstruction.

Thats real bad luck. very talented youngster. The job he did on franklin in rd 1 was inspirational to all youngsters.

Hows Tahlia going? could he be a possible chance to debut?

Talia still recovering from an achilies injury, still 2-3 away from playing AFL footy. Young and Sellar would be next off for KPD's so long as Stevo remains 'ill'.

As much as it'll be tough to go a year without Philthy, I think at his age and stage of his career, combined with our position on the ladder, he needs to bite the bullet and get it right for next season.

Gives us opportunity to bring in a Will Young/Daniel Talia for some more development, and Luke Thompson will play the year out.
