Of all the dumb things WC have done in recent years, (reportedly) offering Allen less money than he has been offered to leave isn't one of them. Offering him massive unders would be a dick move, but the onus is not on every club to immediately pay their players what they are offered elsewhere. Otherwise Carlton would be paying De Koning $1.7m. I didn't love the Barrass trade (more so the dragging it out than the end result) but letting a 29 year old move on for a first round pick instead of extending him beyond age 32 like he wanted was the right move.

I would like Allen to stay, but he has also missed all of 2022 and half of 2024 in the last three seasons. Was great in 2023 and pretty good last year after he came back, but hasn't exactly set the world on fire so far this year.  The idea that WC should just pay him what he wants because they have cap space is ridiculous. How has it worked out for Carlton, St Kilda, North over the years paying Brad Hill, Zac Williams, Jared Polec etc. like they are superstars? WC need to use cap space to improve the list. If Allen was at Hawthorn and talking to WC, people would be saying 'well he's worth X, he might have to accept X or under to stay, WC will need to offer more than X to pry him away'.

It isn't. North wanted to keep McKay but he's not worth the contract he was offered and pick 4 is too good to pass up. A top 5 pick is very attractive to WC yes.

Remains to be seen what the offers are for Allen. I don't think Hawthorn and Brisbane are interested in trying to buy Allen with a ridiculous offer. I think it will come down to where he wants to be football wise more than anything, but if clubs want to throw $1m a year at him that is their prerogative.
