Matthews was possibly the greatest rover the game has seen. 37 or more disposals in a game on 9 occasions. He once kicked 11 goals whilst gathering 41 disposals. He only went more permanently forward in the latter years of his career. He could do the things Rioli could do, sure, but he was significantly better overhead and brushed off opponents at will. Mentioning Rioli in the same breath is kinda weird as he wasn’t nearly the player Lethal was and has never been a dominant onballer. I’d rate Matthews in the best few players I’ve seen and I missed most of his on-ball career (ie the 70s). But I do agree that he was a thug.
The "same breath" is the thug aspect of the two players which in my book underscores Matthews' undoubted talent, strength and football nous - none of which I denied.

Comparing their thuggery is also a bit of a stretch I reckon. Matthews had him well covered in that aspect as well 😆
Anyhoo, I can definitely understand how Lethal would rub you up the wrong way.

no loser mentality, as a sports lover, consistency in officiating is all I ask for

Nah a comment of free kick hawthorn and saying they will ride it to the flag is a bit more than " wanting consistency" especially when everything is viewed through essendon coloured glasses.

I find Lethal an interesting listen, says it straight and a lot of what he says is common sense. Bruns incident aside was a great player that we would’ve have loved playing for us.

You're right. I always thought they were the first of the expansion sides.

Based on my quick look after posting they didn't even win a VFA flag. The current Hawthorn Football Club (apparently there were some earlier incarnations which date back into the 1800s which held the same name which I did not look up) didn't win a premiership until 1961. They've made up for it, that's for sure.

Lethal is only a great listen if you can get past him constantly bumbling his words and talking like Elmer Fudd

My old man used to tell me that Hawthorn were known as 'the easybeats' during the 40's & 50'.
He said 'No club or opposition supporters took them seriously at all until John Kennedy taught them how to be campaigners.'

There is a link between Allan Jeans coached teams and incredible violence. St Kilda also had a few that ended careers - the John Greening incident one of the worst in the sports history.
Never even thought of the Jeans connection.
Ex police officer I think?

Sounds like us last 20 years. My kids are in their 20s and they think we're permanently sh*t

I know I bang on about this a lot, but I am very envious of how Ross Lyon has gone about his time at StKilda and building that list, specifically his prioritisation of running power:

Day 1, he says we are a team of runners.

Since then they have drafted: Wilson, Phillipou, Wang-Mil, Owens, Windhager, Travaglia, Hastie, Garcia and are right into Bergman.
All of them are tall athletic types who are either 6min 2krs or very athletic. They also added Collard and Henry for even more pace.

They are going to explode, and going after Bergman is right in their wheelhouse.

They are building a point of difference.

Off topic as it's Essendon related but why the hell have our VFL team got two byes in a row?? It's not that hard to fixture them with few weeks difference is it? How does that help players coming back? Absolute rubbish

is anyone else applauding the MRO for giving Mansell with 3 weeks?

I like the idea of making an example of this, most won't like it. But gee whiz, these sorts of incidents will reduce drastically
I agree with the call, though I'm curious to see if it holds up to the challenge.

I assume the Tigers will challenge the high contact part given that Mansell pushes him under the arm

Basically the grading system doesn't really work for this kind of thing

the technicality of changing rules in season shouldn't matter in the matter of player safety. With such a high percentage of incidents, AFL should come out and own the decision (to change ruling in season), stand behind the grading and move on.
Don't get me wrong, I would hate it if this was an Essendon player but lets be real for a minute, this has blown out of proportion
