Jenny Williams explaining "what's happening here" (on 5aa) they have 17 players with over 35 games whereas Poort have 8.
Gee "The Creed" sure gives up easy when it's not going their way.
Pretty sure 7 Time Timmy G always says don't go looking look for the "out" door
The Sherrin doesn't know your age.
Plus, I thought everyone who put on "The Big Silver & Teal V" was #1870

To be fair, this result says less about Port than it does about North.

They're at another level.
North are great, no doubt, but this also says a lot about Port.
They got through thanks to a super easy draw, then played Hawthorn who also only made it that far thanks to a favourable draw.
This is really the first time Port have played anything above a mediocre level team. It shows that they got well ahead of themselves and are a long way off.

Does the fact that Port made the prelim mean they won’t be getting a massive leg up with draft concessions anymore?

Hopefully it will stop

They've had two generational talents handed to them on a silver platter. They're going to be good team in a few years time, they don't need any further assistance.

They played us earlier in the year and the first half was about the same, except it rained that game and the second half was a wash-out. I raised my concern (for Port) in the lead up to the game that they were not a top four calibre defensive side, and they couldn't afford to give us as much opportunity in front of goals that they gave Hawthorn last week and did earlier in the year against us.

Despite the soft draw I still think they had a great year and have a lot of good young players, they just need to play the better teams more often so they evolve a far more effective defensive gameplan. So they will get a harder draw next year and I think like Richmond and Geelong will take a step backwards next year having to play the other good teams more frequently but I think in the long-run it will do them a lot of good.

Despite the disappointment of them losing for their supporters, I think they have reason to be optimistic given the amount of good young talent on their list. I don't think there would have been a lot of difference had Hawthorn got over the line last week, there has been a very clear top 3 this year.

Good luck for tonight, should be a cracking game.

Port made the prelim but had 0 All Australians
Other than Scholz gaining attention in a few of their games there were hardly many multiple dominant standout performances from individuals in that team, they were lucky to get 3 in the squad in the first place especially with Libby Birch & Mia King missing out from North in favour of Goody & Borg - who will be very good players but shouldn’t have been ahead of those 2 from North.

It’s very obvious Arnell & Merrett are setting up that Port team to be very even across the board, very akin to that Brisbane team they were apart of.

BTW as I’ve done previously after they release the squad of 42, here’s what my 2024 AFLW All-Australian team would be;

Backs:

Breanna Koenen (Bris), Jenna Richardson (Haw)

Maddi Gay (Ess), Emma O’Driscoll (Freo), Tilly Lucas-Rodd (Haw)

Midfield:

Mim Strom (Freo), Ebony Marinoff (Adel), Ashleigh Riddell (NM)

Ally Anderson (Bris), Jasmine Garner (NM), Aisling McCarthy (Freo)

Forwards:

Ella Roberts (WC), Aishling Moloney (Geel), Aileen Gilroy (Haw)

Taylor Smith (Bris), Caitlin Gould (Adel)

Interchange:

Mon Conti (Rich)
Chelsea Randall (Adel)
Isabel Dawes (Bris)
Eliza West (Haw)
Sophie Conway (Bris)

Most pick themselves but suspect the selectors will try to get another Victorian or someone they see as flavour of the month in there. I could mount an argument to include the extra defender over Conway in which Biddell would be part of the conversation, as would Charlotte Thomas from the Eagles.

Probably in the selectors final team they’ll have a discussion for Matilda Scholz as an extra ruck instead for that last spot but reckon she should be behind Lucy Wales from the Hawks for that spot if they were truely being objective.

Thomas & Alice O’Laughlin (NM) stiffest to miss in my team though; O’Laughlin easily the best ‘true’ small forward/non-hybrid mid-fwd, given where North finished compared to the rest of the league feel Mia King and (as much as I’m not a fan personally) Libby Birch should’ve been in the 42.
Final AA squad ended up including Biddell, Tarrant, Rowbottom & O’Laughlin compared to mine which had Richardson, Koenen, Conti and West.

I won’t argue with Biddell & O’Laughlin being included they were definitely worthy of the honour but Koenen & Richardson were way ahead of Tarrant in higher performing teams and Rowbottom despite the mountain of possessions had such little impact with them in an abysmal Gold Coast team, Conti or West definitely should’ve been ahead of her.
