Swapped to Carlton for a future 4rnd pick, Newman has been an outstanding pick up for Carlton, especially given our severely undermanned backline against The Saints this afternoon

I might be biased, but I cannot think of a player who traded clubs in the last off-season that has proven to be valuable to their new club from a trade cost POV as Nix Newman for Carlton.

Happy to be proven wrong, but Newman has been a fabulous pick up for Carlton. Just so professional and disciplined

Has no standout attributes. Is not strong, fast or skilled. Always looks like he has a good game because of his stats, but those stats are misleading because he plays in the easiest position on the field. Similar player to Jake Llyod, but Llyod is 2 times better (and not even that good in general).

You haven't watched many Carlton games this year have you ? Lloyd has been good for the Dogs, but why can't we evaluate Newman on relative terms, given they play different positions ?

Can we please stop referring to ‘moneyball’ any time a team makes a good move.

Moneyball was a specific, analytic driven approach to player recruitment used by a team that had far less money than their rivals

That’s immensely different to taking on a solid journeyman to play a role for a low price.

If we build a team out of Nic Newman clones, having used stats to realise that nuggety half backs are massively underrated across the league, that will be moneyball. The closest AFL equivalent was Richmond’s fleet of small forwards and Grigg in the ruck, which happened as much by accident as design.

I'll have you know that's premiership ruckman Shaun Grigg, and don't you forget it!
