#4
It’s the lowest jersey number worn by a QB to win a Super Bowl and it belongs to Brett Favre. He led the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXI over the New England Patriots.
#7
Lucky seven has won the Super Bowl five times by three different players. Joe Theismann wore it in Super Bowl XVII when the Washington Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins. He became the first QB to win the big game while wearing a single-digit jersey number. John Elway finally captured the elusive ring when the Denver Broncos upset the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII and he added another title a year later with a victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Ben Roethlisberger etched #7 into championship glory in Super Bowl XL as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks and he took the trophy home a second time this past February with a victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
#8
The jersey has five total wins by three players, two of whom made the number stand out for four straight seasons. Troy Aikman became the first Super Bowl winner with the #8 on his back and he did it often. He led the Dallas Cowboys to wins in Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII and XXX. The Super Bowl in between saw Steve Young wear the jersey in a romp of the San Diego Chargers. Trent Dilfer wore the number when he piloted the Baltimore Ravens over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV.
#9
If you’re a Chicago Bears fan you know who wore this number. Jim McMahon is the only big game winner with this jersey digit as he led the squad to an easy victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XX. It marked the completion of one of the most dominant seasons in NFL history.
#10
Eli Manning made it back-to-back Manning brothers to capture the title when he led the Giants to a late-game comeback stunner over the previously unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Many argue it was the greatest game in Super Bowl history.
#11
Phil Simms had perhaps the best performance by a QB in Super Bowl history when he completed 22 of 25 passes as the Giants put away the Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. Five years later, Mark Rypien led the Redskins over the Buffalo Bills with the same number on his jersey.
#12
It’s been the most successful jersey in big game history and the first one to wear it changed the game’s history. It was the guarantee heard around the world when Joe Namath chimed in that his New York Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. Three years later, Roger Staubach led the Cowboys to their first big game win and the #12 became a dominant figure for years to come. Staubach’s win was the first of nine straight by the number. Bob Griese went back-to-back for the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowls VII and VIII. Terry Bradshaw then repeated the feat as he guided the Steelers to wins in Super Bowls IX and X. Ken Stabler snaked the Oakland Raiders to a victory in Super Bowl XI and Staubach grabbed his second with the Cowboys a year later. Bradshaw then went back-to-back again in Super Bowls XIII and XIV. The number then took a 22-year hiatus before being en vogue again when Tom Brady, who replaced an injured Drew Bledsoe during the year, led the Patriots to a dramatic win over the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI. Two years later, Brady continued the tradition of 12s winning back-to-back as he helped the Pats take titles in Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX.
#13
Years after many thought that Dan Marino would be the first to wear the controversial number to Super Bowl glory, it would be Kurt Warner, who went from unknown to superstar almost overnight, as he led the Rams to a victory over the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV.
#14
For a number that’s always seemed popular among the QB fraternity, it’s a surprise that it’s only happened once. Brad Johnson wore it when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers grabbed the franchise’s only title to date with a win in Super Bowl XXXVII over the Raiders.
#15
The number has been worn to glory three times, including the first two Super Bowls on record. Bart Starr celebrated with the Packers in Super Bowls I and II. It wasn’t until Super Bowl XXV that the jersey became popular again when Jeff Hostetler, who came in late in the season to replace an injured Simms, led the Giants to a dramatic victory over the Bills.
#16
It’s the second most popular winning number in this list as it’s happened seven times. Len Dawson was the first as the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl IV. Jim Plunkett did it twice with victories in Super Bowl XV and XVIII with the Raiders. Joe Montana, who is perhaps the best player in big game history, followed Plunkett’s first win, with a title in Super Bowl XVI. It was the first of his four championships as he also won Super Bowls XIX, XXIII and XIV.
#17
Doug Williams led the Redskins to a rout of the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII. He’s the only one to have won the title with the jersey number.
#18
Peyton Manning was the first of the Manning brothers to capture a title as he led the Indianapolis Colts to a victory over the Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
#19
It’s the highest number a QB is allowed to wear and Johnny Unitas became the first and only to win the title with the #19. He led the Colts to a dramatic victory over the Cowboys back in Super Bowl V.
See the table below for the breakdown by number.

Matt Ryan change your number son, 2 is to low. J-Russ better change his as well.

Greatest Players - By Jersey Number

Source

And just on the Raiders ones...

Interesting bar conversation article by CNN-SI, ranking the NFL’s greatest players by number.

The Raiders had five players ranked as the best to ever wear their respective numbers: Jim Otto (00), Fred Biletnikoff (25), Todd Christensen (46), Tim Brown (81) and Ted Hendricks (83).

The following players were listed as runner-ups with the winner in parenthesis: Lester Hayes (37/Doak Walker), Dave Dalby (50/Mike Singletary), Art Shell (78/Anthony Munoz), Dave Casper (87/Dwight Clark) and Chester McGlockton (91/Kevin Greene).

The Catch over The Ghost to the Post? Doesn’t the Hall of Fame count for anything?

The following players were listed as worthy of consideration with the winner in parenthesis: Daryle Lamonica (3/Bronko Nagurski), Ray Guy (8/Troy Aikman), Ken Stabler (12/Tom Brady), George Blanda (16/Joe Montana), Cliff Branch (21/Deion Sanders), Mike Haynes (22/Emmitt Smith), Willie Brown, Charles Woodson (24/Lenny Moore), Mark van Eeghen (30/Terrell Davis), Marcus Allen, Jack Tatum (32/Jim Brown), Bo Jackson (34/Walter Payton), Otis Sistrunk (60/Otto Graham), Gene Upshaw (63/Willie Lanier), Henry Lawrence (70/Sam Huff), and Howie Long (75/Deacon Jones).

Charles Woodson was also listed as worthy of consideration at No. 21, his number with the Green Bay Packers. I didn’t include players listed as worthy of consideration or outright winners (such as Jerry Rice at No. 80) who built their reputations with other teams even though they wore the same number with the Raiders.

Re: Greatest Players - By Jersey Number

Clark over Casper is a joke.

The most amazing is Vinny Testaverde is worthy of consideration at #16 but two-time Super Bowl champ Jim Plunkett isn’t?

....

Re: Greatest Players - By Jersey Number

32
Jim Brown

Many consider him the NFL’s greatest player. Brown led the NFL in rushing for eight seasons and was the Most Valuable Player three times. He retired at 30 at the peak of his career.

Runner-up: O.J. Simpson

Worthy of consideration: Marcus Allen, Ottis Anderson, Jamal Anderson, Mike Curtis, Franco Harris, Jack Tatum, Ricky Watters, John L. Williams

geez, look at some of those names.

Re: Greatest Players - By Jersey Number

have to agree about the pics, some great ones in there.

amazing how some of these really clear colour photos were taken in the 70s too.

Re: Greatest Players - By Jersey Number

Only five rams (from my count) in there

Faulk, Dickerson, Olsen, Jones and Youngblood
In five years time Steven Jackson should be amongst that prestigious group
Hopefully Sam Bradford could, if he could emerge past Troy Aikman and Steve Young.
Believe Orlando Pace should be before Lou Gorza though.
Tom Fears should of at least been considered at 55 - first Wide Receiver ever.
Big Ben rated in front of two time MVP Bob Waterfield at #7 left me bewildered

Don Hutson says hi!

There passing game would not have taken off if it wasn't for the above man. So imagine my horror, flicking through to 14, and there's Otto Graham.

Y'know, that's fine. His reputation is quite something.

BUT... scroll along to #60... there the **** is again! Surely they can just leave him at one number, yes he wore two different numbers, BUT they've left out a friggin legend of the game to do this.

#36... they care to mention Merton ****ing Hanks and Lawyer Milloy. Those two aren't even worthy of carrying LeRoy Butler's jock-strap.

And Shannon over Sterling Sharpe

The usual anti-Packer bias from SI. Joke of a magazine...

Re: Greatest Players - By Jersey Number

Don Hutson says hi!
These lists are always created for controversy
However leaving out old Don is like leaving out Jerry Rice.

Tom Fears held the receptions for a game record for FIFTY years before Terrell Owens broke it in 2000. Wikipedia also stated that he was the first player to line up away from the tackle at the LOS (I know, wikipedia ).

A lot of bias calls in the list and a lot of forgotten legends.
