Hey guys i want to apply for a security job with wilson security to become a security guard so i can protect government files and other valuable information.

But i need a Negative vet 1 security clearance, does anybody know how i can apply for one? Or is it if i apply for the job they will help me get the Neg Vet 1 security license.

And does anybody else here work with wilson security or in the security industry im only just getting started and would be helpful if i could have some tips.

They organise the clearance, subject to you being given the job - the clearances can take a while to get finalised, mine took almost 12 months. The crazy thing is that I was able to work while the clearance was being undertaken.

Were you initially able to perform all tasks without the Neg Vet?

I had a TS Positive Vet, during the Sydney Olympics there was a huge backlog, priority was given to people who were going to be out mingling with the crowds. Others had to wait up to 9 months to have theirs done, in the meantime, all the skills they'd just spent almost 2 years acquiring went down the gurgler as they spent their time in non secure areas doing filing and other mundane office administration.

I'm with you on this, I'm surprised that they require one before starting. I'd assume they'd be reasonably pricey. I know that at the time, ours were reported to run into the high 10s of ,000s to be done. I'm talking the late 90s.

I just had a quick look at the Australian Public Service and they say to allow 16 weeks for a Level 1 Negative Vet.

Yep, mine is 'secret' in the old language. I was able to view and work on cabinet in confidence documents despite not having clearance.

Its really only possible if they hire somebody already working in a position requiring NV1.

Be warned though, the times given are wildly inaccurate. I've seen one person wait eight months to get Baseline reactivated. Not new, just reactivated (a 6-10 working day process so they claim) when it had ceased only a few weeks earlier. Three months for baseline is not uncommon despite AGSVA's targetted timelines. God knows what NV1 could blow out to.

A lot of agencies do not allow people to work while waiting for the clearance, or people are put on limited duties. I would imagine a group like Wilson would have plenty of work not requiring a clearnace as well though.

I would not have to pay for the neg vet clearance would i ? i would not be able to afford it if its in the thousands of dollars.

Hopefully wilson will give me a call about it in stead of instant rejection of my application. Will let you guys know what happens if use want.

The employer would normally cover all costs associated with obtaining, transferring or reactivating a clearance.

They do, sometimes, only accept people who a clearance which can be transferred from a current role requiring clearance. Its cheaper and quicker to do that. Usually if advertised as requiring a current clearance, that is what they have in mind. Exceptional candidates, or no good ones with a current clearance, can change that.
I am talking from limited experiwence in a different field though.

ok thanks they have had this application up for a while its making me a bit suspicious that they are only looking for people already with the neg vet. But hopefully they can give me another similar which does not require it. And work my way up to that job.
