Traded Nathan Kreuger (SANFL) via Carlton to Geelong for Pick 42

GEELONG has secured 196cm South Adelaide forward Nathan Kreuger in a deal that could help Carlton facilitate a move for Mitch McGovern.

The Cats will give Carlton pick No.42 in return for Kreuger, who the Blues have first access to as part of a state league compensation package received from the AFL last month.

Exactly. Astounding the AFL would sign off on this. The compo pick for mature age state league players to help struggling clubs should be just that. Clubs should not be able to trade them.

It's a way of giving them a priority pick without (a) gifting them a Top 20 type selection, and (b) pushing everyone else down the draft order.

As long as they use it to help land McGovern then it's a good outcome for Carlton and the AFL.

If they pick up an 18 y/o with pick 42 then it's dodgy as hell.

The AFL have already said that the mature age player could also be exchanged for picks.

The AFL knew this was happening. As long as the Blues get McGovern they'll be happy they've made an effort to improve. If they get Shiel as well they'll be ecstatic and then Carlton will use these mid/late picks to draft some kids.

Carlton have had a boat load of state league experienced types on their list. This was never about giving them another Rowe, Mullett or O'Shea. This was about giving them a priority pick in disguise, that they could either use on a gun young state league player if they rated one or trade for the picks needed to bring in experienced AFL players.

But each year it needs to be assessed where the mature aged talent rates, and the policy adjusted accordingly.

I remember hearing some good things about this lad earlier in the year. At 196cm, if those things a true then Geelong have got a really special player out of this. But seriously, why haven't Carlton got this potentially special player. The AFL are just a piss take.

You don't think Carlton know exactly what Adelaide want for McGovern and have made this trade accordingly?
Or that they explored what the best deals on the table for state league players were and this was the best they could get?

That's pretty much what priority picks are. Be glad it's only at 42 instead of 19 or even 10 as was speculated.

Exactly. I thought it was for mature age state league players to help the youngsters coming through. Not leave them in the exact same position of drafting kids that don't come on.

AFL specified we are allowed to trade these selections.
