Hey people, just wondering what you guys think of the place... would it be a good move? What are the pro's and cons on living there?

Thanks pplz.

There are no pros.. The place is a dump.
Can't think of a worse place to live to be honest.

I live there, it's not bad. It's close to the beach and combines the best of city and country life. It's not as busy as the Melbournes and Sydneys but it's not a dump like the moron below you responded.

Closer to surf beaches - my older bro went to Marcus Oldham for a few years(The ag college) - he had a ball there.

Looks like a nice place to live - a bit of rural mixed with urban.

Good place to live.

It's not far to travel to Melbourne if you want a night out in the big smoke.
The beaches and other entertainment/tourist areas aren't far out of town. It's quiet.

Did a 2 year stretch in Geelong and the rest of my family are still there. Good place to live I reckon, south of the Barwon is the better side of town IMO.

I'd even say "as close as possible to the Barwon" :p

Geetown goes alright. Melbourne gives me the ********s most of the time. Too many bloody people, everywhere.

Anywhere near Pakington St is the way to go. Pako is the best street in Geelong and is 15 mins walking away from town.

The nightlife is actually better than people think. Bended Elbow is a top new pub, Barking Dog is great, Barwon Club is good for a few quiet ones. Quite a few nightclubs as well.

Frankston is also a great place to live. You feel a part of the community when your neighbours pop around for a chat and steal some electronics.

Whittington (Solar Drive is a "must see")

You can play spot the house that hasn't been torched.
Harpur Road in Corio is another version of Solar Drive.

ANd don't forget, Colac is only half an hour down the road !

Yep,you can go there and see why Neighbours has the feral family coming from there. :D

Barwon Prison ? ;)

:p

Nope, my stretch was in Grovie. Did go to Barwon Prison on a school excursion (I'm ex-Oberon) and found it to be very interesting.

Has to be seen to be believed doesn't it! Been through there late at night a few times - very shifty!

Going there for the first time next Friday night, I'm usually an Irish Murphy's man but I'm looking forward to trying out The Bended Elbow - have heard good reports.

I'd rather live in Torquay.

Ah, the "land that soap forgot" (as my teacher used to call it) and its 'unique village atmopshere TM'. Decent place for a night on the p1ss though - usually a good party can be found, either there or in Jan Juc.

An excursion to Barwon Prison
Did the teacher say to any student "One day you'll end up in here" ?

It was a Year 11 Legal Studies excursion - to meet the prisoners! We had a murderer, drug trafficker, manslaughterer & armed robber. The frightening thing was how normal they all were. Of course, they all said they were innocent.

HEard somewhere there are 6 or so police cars set to patrol the geelong area. One of those cars is dedicated to solar drive :D

I too went on that excursion last year. Was actually really good. We had 2 armed robbers and 3 murderers/manslaughterers and 1 druggo. We had a few preaching to us how bad the cops are or how their victim deserved it or how they didnt mean it etc etc. Quite sad. There was a couple who seemed to acknowledge and accept what they did and were virtually rehabilitated.

I reckon moving to Geelong is a good move, dependent on what you want of course. From Geelong to the center of Melbourne is 40 mins on the freeway, maybe an hour in peak-hour traffic. From outer Melbourne suburbs its just as long. Geelong has great facilities, is close to the beach, and affordable. Decent schools, public and private, and good night-spots etc.

If its a choice between, say, Sunbury, Caroline Springs, Frankston or another outer suburb of Melbourne, I'd take Geelong anyday. A friend of mine made the move a few years ago - still commutes to work in town, and hasn't looked back...
