I love his work as a commentator, but I've always wondered why he classes himself as a South African. He was born in Australia, played cricket for Australian XIs and domestic cricket in Australia but classes himself as South African. Anyone know why this is the case?

Really? Has a very South African accent and I am pretty sure he played for South Africa didn't he?

Was Hayseman the guy commentating with Border earlier?

Who are the commentators on the TV coverage?

Fanie de Villiers is quite good a commentator

He's lived most of his adult life in South Africa. Usman Khawaja doubtlessly considers himself Australian for similar reasons.

Most of his adult life, yes, but not most of his life. Born here in 1961, he's 50 years old and emigrated to South Africa in 1988. Not sure about his heritage.

Has he said this?

He married a South African bueaty queen.

And opened an Aussie them pub.

Sounds Aussie to me.

Unfortunately he got involved with Allen Stanford.

I find him and the rest of the saffer commentary team unbiassed and refreshing despite their allegiances. I've heard haysman talk about his love of his old home adelaide oval and about working at and playing there.

Yeah, Shaun Pollock in particular, on radio as well, he's very good, especially when you consider all the pummelling's he copped playing against Australia, thumbs up Shaun. :thumbsu:

Yeah the South African commentators were quite impressive. Haysman's always been good but HD (whoever the **** that is), Pollock and Wessels did a good job alongside him. Jackman not so much.

I remember last series over there in 2009, Darryl Cullinan got a guernsey in the box and was ****ing abysmal... good thing he got the arse!

That would be Hylton Ackerman.

He was a Kolpak player wasn't he?

Yeah, I enjoy the South African commentators. They do get more excited when South Africa does something good compared to when Australia does, but imagine what other countries cricket fans think when they see 9's telecast! Cliquey boys club endlessly talking how great Pup, Sids, Dougy, Hadds, Mr Cricket are, Tony Greig flogging some crap memorabillia, Mark Taylor telling us how great "The Big Bang theory" is, subtle ads inserted at every opportunity. None of that stuff from the South Africans, which is great plus their score box thing is great to look at.

The Saffa's are pretty good except for
icc_twiiter_pommie1.jpg

He annoys me.

Part of the reason there isn't the advertising etc, is because Sun sport is their pay TV, so similar to Fox it doesn't advertise anywhere near as much.

Pommie Mbangwa is Zimbabwean not South African but I agree he is incredibly annoying, he just talks too damn much. The worst is when he talks while the delivery is being bowled.

I like Pommie as a commentator, he just needs to know when there are 2 wickets left and 20 - 30 runs to win, he doesn’t have to over hype the situation.

We can see it is tense ourselves.

Great commentary team. Probably best anywhere around the world. Mike Haysman is a very good commentator as well. Brings excitement, and interest to the match. Good stuff Saffers

I reckon Haysman is an excellent commentator, and I generally enjoyed the entire commentary team they had over there, except for Pommie, who is a captain obvious is ever I've heard one.

As for why Haysman considers himself South African (if indeed he does), surely living there for a couple of decades warrants those sentiments.
