We didn’t recruit them in bulk from North, someone is just having a laugh trying to count them as if it might be meaningful to rummage through linkedin looking for anyone who ever worked at both clubs.

Thing is that you have a lot of mobility between jobs at sporting clubs because a lot of those jobs are low paid/casual/internships, or gig work. Particularly allied health jobs, trainers, game day roles and anything related to AFLW.

Essendon employs a couple hundred people, so it’s really easy to find a physio and a couple of admin people, a coach and a player or two that just happened to work at another club at some point in the past (not necessarily all at once). If you started counting all the people we’ve brought in over the last few years who had at one time worked for St Kilda or Richmond or GWS or Geelong you’d have a similar number, it’s just the industry.

In terms of the specific list, McPherson was only at North for one season and not at the same time as Brad Scott, he was at Melbourne before that and for a lot longer. His connection at Essendon was Josh Mahoney via Melbourne.

Rath and Robbins are the two that Brad actually brought to Essendon. David Rath was at Hawthorn during their premiership years and then at St Kilda. He also worked with the Wallabies during the rugby World Cup. North doesn’t even rate a mention on his CV, but he did know Scott from there. Ben Robbins was at North for a few years a while back and then went to St Kilda for a few years after that. We got them both from the Saints when Ratten was sacked and they all cleared out.
