Having a pub chat about Dean Jones and the extraordinary amount of crazy onfield 'incidents' he was involved in. For example, the time he insisted that Ambrose take off his Rasta sweatbands during a day/nighter and Curtly, who up until that time on the tour was quite ordinary, became a match winner for the rest of the series.

Or when he suggested that Hadlee was under his control - and then received some of the best bowling ever seen which reduced his average considerably.

Someone then mentioned a dismissal in the Windies when he was run out after walking on a caught-behind that was called a no ball. Can anyone confirm this ?

... and any other Deano stories

BTW remember Deano commentating on state cricket and rabbitting on about his double ton in Madras and then saying to his co commentator ".. well, that's enough about me. What do you think about me ? ".

Went to a social cricket day at St Bernards CC in about '90 where Deano was the guest of honor (I think he was an "Old Boy" fo the college?).

It was your prototypical cricket club social day ... plenty of grog flowing, lots of fun and games, barbie being cooked, the odd nude lap, and every fielder had to field with a can of VB etc...

So the star of the show - Deano - goes out to bat, only to snick one early through to the keeper. Being a bit of a sport, and realizing that the crowd were keen to see their hero Deano in action, the keeper played his part and spilt the catch - and his own beer in the process.

The throng in front of the pavilion were in hysterics at the keepers antics, appreciative of the keepers efforts to keep the star at the crease for a little while longer ... until they watched as Deano walked off the ground towards the carpark and, with pads, whites etc. still on, got into his car and drove off swearing.

Apparently he was none too happy about how light-hearted everyone was being about the cricket match on this sunny Sunday afternoon in the suburbs.

As you can imagine, the eager throng were stunned ... silent for a while ... until he started backing out of the carpark. Not surprisingly, Deano was loudly booed and jeered as his car departed the parking lot and out into traffic. The word 'sook', with a few other more colorful terms were highly over-used in his wake.

Deano didn't return ... and I don't think he's been invited back since.

From memory he was bowled.

The relationship between Merv Hughes and Dean Jones is a little bit delicate.

It dates back to the mid 1990s when Merv was trying to get back into the Victorian team and they played a practice match at Frankston. Merv and Deano were on opposite teams and the sledged each other non stop while Merv tried to hit him with the ball and Jones smacked him all around the ground. Apparently the almost came to blows at a previous training session at the Junction Oval.

I was on a trip with Merv on the 2001 Ashes Tour and one night he went to speak at a Dean Jones function. The next day some one asked Merv 'in your book you said Dean Jones was a c*nt, then why did you go and speak at his dinner'. Merv's response was 'He is a c*nt but if he is stupid enough to pay me $1000 to speak at one of his pi$$y functions then I will take it.

At another function when Merv spoke he started of by saying 'Dean Jones was supposed to be here tonight but the doors weren't big enough for his head to fit through'.

And everyone knows the reason why Deano got dropped from the Australian test team.

I remember when he was 12th man in a test in Brisbane. There was a hail storm and Deano ran out with helmets for the ground staff.

The was his last match for the test team wasn't it?

I remember when he had the so-called Deli Belly virus that had been going around. He had to bat and had been caught "chucking" against India. He went on to make a century

Double century. Infact, he was literally sh*tting in his dacks during that innings.

I didn't really need to know that. But thanks anyway:eek: :o :p

My favourite memories of Deano are when he was in the One Day side and watching him run singles into 2s with Steve Waugh.

The 200 he made when he was in India and suffering from a virus. Border telling him if he can't go on, to leave and get a real man, a Queenslander who could do the job. It inspired Deano to stay out there.

That was the first final in the 92-93 B&H Series. Jones didnt last long after that either...only made 13 runs. Ambrose went on to take 5/32 and man of the finals.

Another Deano memory - chucking a testimonial in his honour for retiring from first-class cricket.

Big crowd turns up (29,000 from memory) as those games were quite a novelty at the time.

Deano pockets the $400,000 - then promptly announces he is playing on!

He got a bit too friendly with Bob Simpson's daughter in Perth one night

Geez, she got around then! I heard that that was the reason for Tim Zoehrer's demise as well!

I remember Dean Jones telling Curtley Ambrose to take off his white sweat bands in a one-day final at the SCG in about 1992 and Curtley wasn't impressed, so much so that he ran in faster and took 5 wickets to help the West Indies win the game.

My story about him doesnt put him in the best light.Dont get me wrong he was my favourite cricketer and I loved the way he went about it but everyone knows he had his problems.Darren Berry once told me at a trivia night that the first time he roomed with Deano he woke in the middle of the night to hear Deano going through his whole innings at Madras in his sleep in almost run by run fashion eg "Shastri bowls- 3 to midwicket".Anyone who has followed Deano closely will tell you he has always said he remembers pretty much zilch from that knock.Basically Berrys summation was that he was a great cricketer but an absolute bull**** artist.

Berry will be a guess speaker at a Cricket presentation night I will be going to. Someone should ask me what he things of Dean Jones. We all know they had the big blew in the mid and late 1990's. I might ask the question myself.

Ask him about Merv aswell.Guarantee he says the rumours of the rift between those two are bull**** but the ones about he and Deano are spot on.
